Solving a mystery can be fun by Christina Holt

Sherlock-Small-Text-Transparent-12-peopleChristina Holt has written two YA paranormal novels Second Chance and Vanished  for Lachesis Publishing – both books have an element of mystery to them. It’s understandable since she is an avid fan of mystery novels. Well, who doesn’t love a good whodunnit? But Christina has gone one step further in her quest to solve a good mystery . . .

One of my personal favorite genres to read would be mystery and suspense books. Especially when the story has unexpected turns and keeps you guessing up until the very end. I think most people feel a sense of personal victory when they are able to solve the ending (or figure out the bad guy), before it is actually revealed in the book.

THE LIBRARY (SHERLOCK’S STUDY) from one of the Escape Room Games thegreatescaperoom.com

THE LIBRARY (SHERLOCK’S STUDY) from one of the Escape Room Games thegreatescaperoom.com

I think that is why I got so excited when my husband first introduced me to The Great Escape Room game. (If you haven’t heard of this, you should look it up online to see if there is one near you!). There are several locations in various cities, and each one has different rooms all with unique themes. The staff locks you into a room with a group of friends and you have one hour to solve a series of puzzles in order to unlock the room. They let groups of seven people in at a time, and you definitely want different personalities in your group. The time I went, it worked out  really well, because we had different types of people, some that were very quiet but smart, some that were always looking for all the details everywhere, some that were leaders, some just following directions.

The room we did was called The Heist, and it was all about stolen paintings, and we had to find our way through 3 different rooms in order to find the stolen art work and find where the real art was hidden. If you get stumped, they give you clues along the way. It was so much fun. :)

The next one we are doing is called The Mayflower, and it’s about a serial killer who has been nicknamed The Mayflower because of the ship in a bottle token he leaves by his victims. The discription says that the killer messed up and left evidence which leads to his apartment, which is where the game starts.

It really feels like walking through a mystery novel and you and the people in the room are the characters in the book.

Q and A with USA Today Bestselling Author Misty Evans (dark romantic suspense & sexy paranormal author)

USA Today bestselling author Misty Evans

USA Today bestselling author Misty Evans

Bestselling authors have “been there and done that”. They know how much work it takes to hit a bestseller list and they are here to share their wisdom (and wit). Today I’m featuring USA Today bestselling author Misty Evans. Misty writes dark romantic suspense and sexy paranormals. Welcome Misty!

JD: What was your first book that hit a bestseller list? What was the list, where did the book rank when it first hit, and how high did your book get?

10ME: Oh, gosh, I suppose my first “bestseller” was Operation Sheba. My publisher did a promo on it in 2010 and it went to #1 on the Amazon Romantic Suspense list, #2 in Romance, and #3 in overall Kindle books. The other two books in the series at that time did well too, ending up high in the RS list. I’ve had two books hit the USA TODAY list, Deadly Pursuit, and The Secret Ingredient. Both were in boxed sets and there was much celebrating by all of us.

JD: What were you doing when you found out you hit the bestseller list? And how did you celebrate or mark the occasion?

5ME: With Operation Sheba, it was huge. My first published book…I was over the moon. I had been watching the Amazon lists the first day of the promo, but it was an email from my editor later that evening that told me I’d reached so high. There was Snoopy Happy Dancing and champagne the next day from my hubby.

What does being a “successful author” mean to you?

ME: Success isn’t about lists or royalties or rankings to me. It used to be, and I made myself a ver
y anxious and not very happy author. I had to change my thinking. Success is about what’s inside you, not what’s outside. Are you happy? Do you look forward to sitting at the keyboard everyday? I can’t control numbers, algorithms, or new technology. What I can do is love my job, write the books fans adore, and find ways to help other authors make their dreams come true. That is true success to me.

JD: Some authors are great at it, while others can’t find the right formula, but in order to be a success in today’s market, you have to do promotion. So, what are the top three things that you do consistently when it comes to promotion?

ME: 1.) Write the next book—you absolutely can’t do any better promo than putting out the next book in a series and having the links to your other stories in the back matter. 2.) Nail your keywords and categories. When a potential reader searches by subject matter on any retailer, you want to be sure your book comes up in the appropriate category. 3.) Put out a quality newsletter with behind-the-scenes snippets, recipes, and engaging content, not just “Buy My Book” messages. This goes hand-in-hand with social media as well. Engage your readers, don’t just preach to them.

JD: What is one thing you absolutely LOVE about being an author and one thing that makes you BONKERS?

301810_435630796455597_1824116361_n503fcedff1466-525369c545c9cME: I love creating stories and seeing how they resonate with readers. In January, with the release of DEADLY FORCE, the fourth book in my SCVC Taskforce series, I raised money for Paws & Stripes, an organization that rescues shelter dogs and trains them to be service companions to veterans with PTSD. My fans loved the idea and really got behind it, sharing our Operation Freedom Dogs campaign and I recently mailed a check for over $2000 to P&S.

What drives me bonkers is trying to find enough hours in the day to write and promote!

JD: Who are some of your favourite authors and why?

ME: I have too many favorite authors to name them all, but my favorites tend to be the ones who create fascinating worlds I can sneak off to whenever I want and forget the real world for a few hours . . . for a few days!

36JD: What are you currently working on?

16ME: I’m writing the next SCVC Taskforce novel, Deadly Intent, and editing the next Justice Team Series book, Exposing Justice, with Adrienne Giordano. Both books release in July.

JD: In your daily work routine what do you do first and why?

write/plot/creativeI definitely write first thing in the morning. That’s when my creative energy is high. I often write later in the day when I can, but I’m most productive first thing in the morning. My best plots come in the evening or at night. I don’t know why, but that’s how my brain works!

social media/promotionSocial media is so much fun, I have to save it for a treat after the work is done. Usually that means waiting until lunch time or later.

email/adminThis area is best handled after the work is done, too. It takes me too long to get the right energy flowing if I start with email or admin duties first thing in the morning. They tend to suck my creative-self dry.

JD: What would I find on your desk at this very moment?

ME: I don’t have a desk anymore. I write on my laptop, often in bed or sitting at the kitchen table. I’ve found I’m more motivated and inspired if I move around and don’t confine myself to one set place. I’m definitely a minimalist these days! The clutter-free zone frees up my mental space.

JD: Finish this sentence: I’m a writer because . . .

ME:  . . . it makes me happy!

A gritty, suspense thriller about the underbelly of Hollywood: City of Toys by Lindy S. Hudis

City-of-toys-linds-s-kudisToday’s sneak peek is from the suspense thriller  City of Toys, by Lindy S. Hudis.

What it’s about:

Four beautiful women seek fame and fortune in Hollywood, the City of Toys, where actresses are like dolls, playing pretend on the big screen.

Marlo: a former child actress from New York City.
Rhonda: a small-town beauty queen.
Kim: a “nice Jewish girl” with a painful childhood.
Guyla: a “serious actress” with a debilitating, stress-induced illness.

Marlo, Rhonda, Kim, and Guyla, become friends living in the same apartment complex, in the city where dreams and disasters go hand-in-hand. They come to rely on each other as they deal with sexual come-ons, crazed stalkers, jealous starlets and the constant pressure of trying to make it in showbiz. But when the pressure gets too much, will their friendship save them or will the City of Toys break them?

EXCERPT:

It was well after midnight in the City of Angels. She sat on the roof of her apartment building and stared out at the enormous electric ocean. The glittering lights of Hollywood sparkled like multi-colored sequins against the black velvet sky. I can’t take it anymore, the beautiful, young woman thought, I can’t take this pain. She had just swallowed a whole bottle of Paxil and chased it down with a fifth of vodka. The girl had not planned on committing suicide, but what she had gone through in Tinseltown was enough to make anyone want to end it all.

She hated her life, hated the world and, most of all, hated herself. It certainly was not what she had envisioned; the Hollywood dreams she’d had ever since she was a little girl. The lonely, young woman from a painful childhood was desperate for inclusion in the glittering world of fame and fortune. She was desolate, regretful, and had seen the devil himself in this “City of Angels”. She also knew she was just one of thousands of lost souls who needed to be loved and adored by the whole world, just like the movie stars were. Hurting, forlorn, lost souls were everywhere in Los Angeles, and there was nothing anyone could do. It didn’t happen for her; it didn’t happen for a lot of people, and she simply didn’t want to accept that.t was well after midnight in the City of Angels. She sat on the roof of her apartment building and stared out at the enormous electric ocean. The glittering lights of Hollywood sparkled like multi-colored sequins against the black velvet sky. Weeping convulsively, the young woman staggered to the edge of the building and looked down. She stumbled and clutched the handrail. Feeling dizzy and hopeless, she gazed down at the luminosity that was a fantasyland. She thought about all that had happened to her, and the awful things she had done. She had done some terrible things in order to survive. She threw one leg over the railing, holding tightly with one hand. The colored lights seemed to blur into one big blob of glitter, and she thought she might retch. Goodbye, Hollywood, she cried to herself. With that, she let go of the handrail and plunged to her death onto the well-manicured lawn at the foot of the Hollywood Hills.

“Astolfo’s wonderful first sentence in Sweet Karoline explodes on the page and resonates right to the end of this twisting examination of dangerous minds. Never have I encountered a narrative voice that alternates more deftly between alienating and enticing.” —Mel Bradshaw, author of Fire On The Runway

“A deliciously twisted story about the perplexing power of adult female relationships. By turns scathingly funny and darkly insightful, Sweet Karoline is a hedonistic journey with all the right ingredients: lust, betrayal, true love and mystery. Grab a glass of wine and have the bottle handy. A compelling read from the start through to the surprising end.” —Robin Spano, author of Death’s Last Run

“In Catherine Astolfo’s chilling new novel Sweet Karoline, things aren’t always as they seem. Anne, the multifaceted anti-heroine in this noir tale takes a fateful journey into her forgotten past, uncovering the painful roots of her childhood. While furrowing for answers, a mystery unfolds, truths swirl to the surface, a heinous murder occurs. Who’s the killer? Caught in a tangled web of greed, lies and deceit Anne must come to terms with her past, present and future, and the bleak realization that those we hold close may be the last ones to trust. Compelling, visually descriptive, deftly delivered…Catherine Astolfo’s got the goods!” —Douglas Wickard, author of A Perfect Husband

“Sweet Karoline is a multi-layered mystery, where nothing is as it seems. The story grips you on page one and leads you through a maze of history, twisted relationships, and ultimately the darkness of the human mind.” —Liz Bugg, author of Oranges and Lemons

“In Sweet Karoline, Astolfo has created a daring hybrid mystery that combines elements of romance, history, and suspense in a carefully crafted story that keeps you guessing to the very end. Astolfo explores new boundaries as she extends her reach beyond the cozy mystery in this psychological exploration of the mind of a killer. A unique exploration of guilt and revenge.” —Michael J. McCann, author of The Fregoli Delusion

“The clever plot twists in Sweet Karoline will enrapture you from page one through the last paragraphs of this fast-paced modern mystery. Author Catherine Astolfo exhibits a strikingly perceptive gift for believable dialogue and rich character development. Her dry wit and colorful descriptions will have you howling in laughter at points, but in tears at others as she digs deep into the themes of guilt, race, and relationships. The powers of love and redemption are strong, but does the heart of an Ice Queen ever really melt? Enjoy the romp from Los Angeles, through Canada, to a priceless Italian rendezvous—all in the pages of Sweet Karoline, where long-buried secrets lie.” —Lisa Pell, award-winning author of Who’s Your Daddy, Baby?
