ABOUT THE AUTHOR: NATALIE G. OWENS

Pink velvet and black lace. Light and darkness. A world of contrasts exists in Natalie’s stories because every rose has its thorn. Her favourite stories to write are romances with a dark edge featuring brooding heroes, strong heroines, an intriguing mystery, and a good dash of fantasy.

Married, with one son, she now calls the beautiful island of Malta home after eleven good years in Atlanta, GA. As a professional editor and author, her days are always busy, but when she’s not working—or muttering to herself about her book plots like a batty old maid—she enjoys spending time with family and friends (both online and offline), sipping on a good shiraz, reading, cooking and entertaining, watching a good movie, travelling, and ogling shoe store displays. Most of all, she loves to meet and communicate with other authors and readers.

SNEAK PEEK:

Max took a step closer to the young woman who sat stiffly on a chair, one room away from where her father lay dead, murdered in cold blood. A redhead, yes, but not as solid a shade as Madeleine’s, he realized. Miss Ingram’s thick, copper-infused corkscrew tresses tumbled about her head in willful abandon, reaching down past her breasts. The mass of loose hair possessed burnished gold tints that would create a blinding halo under direct sunlight, as though spun from that bright star at the liminal stage of a breathtaking sunset…

She wore that magnificent fall of autumn brilliance like a blanket of grief separating her from the world. A lone figure, her head down in a pose that dared anyone to come pull her from the clutches of hushed despair, she kept her hands linked tightly together on her lap, each finger vying to be the others’ lifeline, and stared hard at the carpet beneath her feet—a woman in utter disbelief that her life had been turned upside down, that her dear father was no more.
Commiseration ought to have raised its scratchy, skeletal hand from the depths of his being, screaming, ‘I know this!’. The same vacant aura, a cosmic inner emptiness, had been his, once in the distant past. He’d had to snap out of that daze fast back then because circumstances had dictated it, but not before grief had burned itself into every vein, every muscle, every sinew, every layer of flesh he possessed. He’d been branded, time and again, with its red-hot poker, until the furtive chill of resignation had put its anesthetizing balm on his heart. Time could heal in some ways, but his wounds had been haphazardly patched up, leaving his soul marred with permanent scars. Does one ever shake off such horror? He had come to doubt that over the years and, eventually, disbelieved it altogether. Memories got fuzzier, but the worst ones stuck like wasps on honeydew and stayed there, mired in his psyche.

Max found himself in equal measure entranced and disgusted. But, while he stared at the woman, revulsion started to give way to something else, something eminently more insidious. He did not enjoy having his heartstrings pulled, or moments when a sense of duty felt dangerously close to personal obligation. He didn’t know these people, didn’t owe them anything except a day’s, week’s, or month’s work. Anything more—the threads of emotion—would be unwelcome. He quelled the pang of sympathy that rose from his gut. Pity is a springboard for trouble, and trouble brings pain or, at the very least, undesired change.

She must have felt his attention on her for she tilted her face up to him.

His breath hitched, drawn with startling violence into his lungs as green eyes fixed on him. Green eyes—but not a copy of Madeleine’s emerald ones that had haunted his nightmares for years, and still did on occasion. This woman’s were a precious blue-green jade. Limpid and light in shade, they shone like twin stars. Beautiful porcelain skin complemented a perfectly shaped angelic face with a pointed chin, perked up nose, and Cupid’s bow lips.

A mouth that would drive a man crazy. Immediately, a vision of her bending down and wrapping those sensual lips around his throbbing erection finagled its way in his mind…

Would she be soft to the touch?

His heart thumped faster and empathy gave way to yet another emotion so overwhelming and unexpected, he felt powerless.

Bloody hell! This isn’t the time … or the place.

He couldn’t be standing there, mesmerized by a beautiful woman, when he’d been called to assist with a murder investigation.

What’s a gal to do when she has the power to bring people from another era to her own?

FIGHTING FATE COVERToday’s Sneak Peek is by Lachesis Publishing author Louise Clark.  Her book is called Fighting Fate, a contemporary romance with some paranormal twists and turns.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT:

Faith Hamilton is different. Blessed with the power to draw her ancestors from the past into the present, Faith formed a strong bond with Andrew Byrne, her charming rogue of a “relative” from pre-Revolutionary Boston. Andrew’s first visit when they were both teens led to many more over the years. But despite her close friendship with Andrew, Faith has always felt that her life would never be normal unless she made a drastic change. Now she avoids relationships with people outside her tight family circle, fearing she might be forced to reveal her ability. Instead, she tries to keep it a secret, and her private life hidden as she focuses on her career. For a while she succeeds, until she meets the sexy and dynamic Cody Simpson.

Cody is a mathematician, a man devoted to classifying and defining the world around him.  Once hurt by a woman whose sole focus was her career, not the people in her life, he swore he would never allow himself to be attracted to this kind of woman again—until he meets the beautiful and captivating Faith Hamilton.

Intrigued by Cody, Faith can’t stop her growing attraction to him. Nor can she keep that charming rogue, Andrew from popping into her life whenever he chooses. As she frantically schemes to keep the two men apart, her problems multiply at home, at work, and most of all in her relationship. How long can she keep up this double life? More importantly, what will Cody think if he finds out about her magical power?

or Amazon kindle

EXCERPT:

Footsteps sounded on the staircase. Faith closed her mouth on what she’d planned to say as a male figure emerged from the upper level, running lightly down the stairs. Seeing the two women he hesitated briefly, then he flashed a grin and said, “Hi.

Black hair, blue eyes, muscles in all the right places, Cody Simpson was the kind of man Chloe would appreciate as a son-in-law. He was also the kind of man Faith avoided. She smiled blandly back at him. “Hi.”

“Nice day, isn’t it?” He glanced at Faith, sweeping her with a look that catalogued every part of her, from head-to-toe. Then he deliberately looked from Faith to Chloe, his eyebrows raised.

Very much aware that the slacks she was wearing did little to minimize her height and that her blond hair had started to stray from the restraints that kept it in a tight chignon, Faith wished she knew some way of escape. She didn’t want to introduce Cody to her mother, who she knew would be intrigued by the good-looking man. She knew Cody expected to be introduced and that he wouldn’t understand why a casual, ‘Cody this is my mother, Chloe. Mom, this is Cody Simpson,’ left her frozen in terror. Each and every one of the good manners drilled into her from the time she was tiny was actively demanding she make the simple introduction. Every survival instinct was fighting back, just as intensely, telling her that she’d be a fool to open that door, even a crack.

She swallowed hard, avoided Cody’s eyes, ignored the surprised curiosity emanating from her mother, and said, “Yup.”

Cody raised his brows, then shrugged. “See you later, then.”

“Sure,” Faith said, hoping she wasn’t blushing.

Cody nodded and headed off toward the NIT offices. Faith shoved open the front door.

Outside Chloe said cheerfully, “What a gorgeous male. Who is he?”

Faith shrugged. “Our new systems guy. He lives upstairs so we hardly ever see him.”

“You know him then?”

Faith shook her head. “Not really.” A wash of heat told her that now she really was blushing. Not surprising since she’d just told her mother a whopper. Well, not a complete whopper. What she knew about Cody came from Sue Green. She respected Sue’s opinion enough that she’d wasted more than an hour or two fantasizing about dating Cody Simpson, but she didn’t actually know him the way you do when you talk to someone. Nor was she going to allow herself to get to know him. As attractive as he was, Cody Simpson wasn’t for her. Not now. Not ever.

She’s a small town librarian and an exorcist . . .

The Awakening Book 1 The Bloodmane Chronicles by Sara BrookeToday’s Sneak Peek is from the paranormal (with romantic elements) The Awakening: Book 1 The Bloodmane Chronicles by Lachesis Publishing author Sara Brooke. The Awakening is a compelling and riveting book about a librarian who discovers she has the ability to perform exorcisms on people who are possessed by demons.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT:

Everything she knows . . .

Renda Bloodmane is a quiet librarian, who lives a quiet life, in a small quiet town in Florida. Her days consist of going to work (which she loves) and watching old Hollywood movies with her dog Jane (which she also loves). Her life is just fine, if a tad on the dull side. So, when her best friend from college, Bobbie Trillo, invites her to visit her family in Georgia, Renda decides a vacation is in order. Bobbie has moved back in with her mother and brother after her parents’ divorce. Things aren’t going well for her mother, and Bobbie needs Renda’s friendship and support.

Everything she believes . . .

Renda soon discovers that there is a lot more going on in the Trillo household than meets the eye. The moment she sets foot in the Trillo home, Renda starts seeing ghosts everywhere she turns. But one very unique ghost stands out from the rest. A sinfully attractive man named Cole, who died more than one hundred years ago, begins to haunt Renda’s every thought. He warns her there is evil in the house and it’s attacking Bobbie’s mother. Only Renda can stop the demon from taking over and destroying the entire family.

Will never be the same . . .

Renda can’t believe she’s seeing dead people. She can’t believe she’s attracted to a dead man. And most of all, she can’t believe that she’s the chosen one who has to fight a centuries-old powerful demon. But there is more to Renda Bloodmane than even she realizes. Her quiet, ordered life is about to change and there’s nothing she can do to stop it.

EXCERPT:

As I slowly opened my eyes, I could hear various noises outside my door. There seemed to be several people talking―some with strange British accents that sounded clipped and distinct. Looking over at Jane, I could see that she was awake as well and was literally sitting at the door with her back to me. She looked over her shoulder at me as if to say, “Come on. We’ve got to see what’s out there!”

So I decided to be brave and find out.

Sitting up, I slid my feet into my favorite green slippers and slowly shuffled to the door. Jane hadn’t moved and remained in her upright position. She didn’t greet me as I walked up, nor did she turn her head for a gentle petting.

When I opened the door, she raced out and disappeared into the darkness. I whispered her name, trying to get her to come back, but it was impossible to see where she’d gone.

I was immediately distracted in my effort to find her, because the hallway was now filled with a strange yellow glow and it helped my eyes adjust to a very unusual sight.

There, in the middle of the hallway, was a large group of people, but there was something wrong with them.

One woman was leaning over the railing, rocking back and forth and singing songs to herself, while a trail of vomit leaked out of the side of her pale mouth and traveled down her neck, staining her old fashioned white blouse.

A man was slowly walking down the hallway, dragging an ax behind him, but he was missing one of his arms.

Two children played together in the center of the hallway, but they were both badly burned.

And there were many more people, but they all looked injured or . . . dead.

My mind raced and threatened to shut down altogether. In the midst of the chaos, small white orbs traveled up and down the hallway. Once in a while, an orb would stop and then grow until it became one of the ghosts. Other times, an orb would simply flit around back and forth until it connected with a wall and disappeared.

“It’s a strange sight, isn’t it?”

The voice came from behind me and nearly caused my heart to stop.

It was Cole.

Turning around, I answered as calmly as I could, “Um, yes. What is all this?”

Cole stood there amidst all of the strange people, yet despite his handsome profile, seemed to fit in perfectly. Perhaps it was the fact that he was pale like the others or that he was wearing clothing not of this era. But unlike the others, he made my heart race from fear and something else―was it attraction? I couldn’t be sure. It didn’t matter. He was as weird as the rest of them, and I needed to be on my guard.

“You can see us,” he said quietly. “It seems you’re able to bridge the gap between our worlds.”

“Are all of you . . . dead? Are you ghosts or something?”

EXCERPT:

I didn’t actually see anything strange at first, but the temperature around me felt like it had suddenly dropped several degrees. Goose bumps popped up on my arms as the cooler air surrounded me in a chilly embrace. Taking a deep breath, I briskly rubbed my skin to warm up and continued pushing the cart.

When I turned down the aisle, I was surprised to see a man standing with his back to me. He was looking down, and appeared to be reading something intently. At first, I didn’t notice anything strange about him, but as I moved a bit closer, I saw a big red stain on the back of his shirt.

It was blood.

My heart started beating quickly and a list of things to do raced through my mind. I wasn’t sure exactly how long it would take for the paramedics to arrive, but clearly the man didn’t realize that something was wrong with him as he was simply standing in place, reading a book.

Dropping the novel I was holding into the cart, I started to approach him. “Sir, I think there’s something wrong with your . . .” But I never finished my sentence, because as soon as I started speaking, the man turned around to face me.

He was in his mid-thirties and looked calm, almost disinterested. But that was probably because I couldn’t see most of his face. It had been blown away by something brutal . . . maybe a gunshot blast.

It was unbelievable, but I was looking into the face of a person who couldn’t possibly be alive. Blood dripped down from a gaping hole in his forehead and covered most of his face in a red sheen. Part of his mouth was missing, and a smiling, skeletal profile gleamed at me under the library’s fluorescent lights.

My mind told me to run. Flee. But then another part of my brain suddenly came alive, filling me with a sense of calm. It was a feeling that I’d never felt before. And in that deep, strange calmness, I heard a gentle, masculine voice speak to me.

I wanted to read for a while.

As soon as the voice entered my brain, it left just as quickly and for some bizarre reason, I didn’t want it to go away. Because somehow, I knew that if the voice disappeared―so would this strange, dead corpse . . .

THE ACCIDENTAL WITCH COVERIt’s Halloween season so get your spooky on with Today’s Sneak Peek,  The Accidental Witch by Jessica Penot (paranormal with romantic elements). It’s funny, scary, clever, and features a heroine that you will just love to bits.

What it’s about:

Phaedra Michaels is a small town psychologist who is beginning to lose hope. Two of her patients at the local hospital in Dismal, Alabama have just killed themselves, she’s still reeling from her divorce and what turned out to be a disastrous marriage, and her father has died, leaving her without any notion of who her real mother is.

Feeling desperate, Phaedra uses it to cast spells to save her fading patients. Suddenly, good things start happening.  Phaedra’s patients begin to get better and she even starts dating the sexy doctor from the hospital.

Phaedra is so happy she doesn’t notice the small things that start to go wrong in Dismal, or the dark creatures slithering out of the shadows near her house. When Phaedra finally realizes her spells have attracted every card-carrying demon from hell, she has no choice but to accept help from a slightly nerdy, 500 year-old warlock with a penchant for wearing super hero T-shirts and a knack for getting under Phaedra’s skin. Now, if only she could get the hang of this witch thing, she might be able to save her town.

EXCERPT:

I carefully pulled the twine and the brown paper fell off. Beneath the paper was a large, leather bound book. It looked like an old journal or recipe book. It was tied together with a red ribbon and the ribbon held numerous pieces of paper. I ran my hands over the smooth leather and read the title of the book. It simply said Spells.

I laughed and pulled the red ribbon that held the book together. The book fell open. Inside, it was like a recipe book a mother would pass on to a daughter. There were old typed pages with handwritten notes in the margins. There were pages added with handwritten spells on them and drawings.

“What the hell?” I said as I leafed through the old book. There were potions and summoning spells and candle spells. In-between pages, there were pressed flowers and herbs and some of the pages were stained with old candle wax.

I set the book down and went into the kitchen and opened the fridge. At least the kitchen was done. It looked like any other modern kitchen. It had granite counter tops and marble floors. I’d spared no expense making it look like something that belonged in an old southern mansion. I wanted the house to be perfect and I had Johnny Boy’s money to help me achieve that dream. The lights flickered when I entered. I would have to talk to Lawson about that in the morning. I took a beer out of the fridge and opened it. I had a sip and grabbed a roll of cookie dough. Armed with the cookie dough and beer, I returned to the book. It had fallen off the counter, to the floor, and was opened to a page. I laughed again. The page it had opened to was love spells. That was just what I needed.

I sat down and ate and drank and leafed through the book. I stopped at a page with an interesting picture on it. The spell was an awakening spell. It awakened you to the supernatural world. I hesitated and looked at the script around it.

Something fell upstairs and the lights went out. I fumbled around and found the nearest flashlight and switched it on just as the lights flickered back on.

“Lawson, you asshole,” I said as I turned the flashlight off. “The wiring is done in the parlor, my ass.”

A sudden wave of fatigue washed over me and I picked up my mess and carted my sorry butt upstairs. I climbed into bed with my flashlight. I still had the book of spells. It had been so long since someone had given me something that I had forgotten what it felt like. I knew the book was more than weird. It bordered on creepy. A normal woman would probably burn the damn thing, but I wasn’t a normal woman. I was a lonely divorcée living in a house known to be haunted, but I loved it the way most people love their pets. I was the daughter of a man who had made it clear that he loathed me, with a step-mother who’d bought me toilet paper for Christmas. The creepy book was wonderful to me. It meant that someone out there, even if they were a freak, cared about me, and freak love was better than no love at all.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT:
Pottery sculptor Erika Sherwood has no idea her televised wedding in Las Vegas is for real until an official confirms she and the stranger she’s just met are legitimately wed.

A Drift Lord and warrior of the Tsuran, Magnor tricks the redhead into marriage because she’s one of six women prophesied to save Earth. But as he’s forced into her company in their race against the apocalypse, he wonders if he risks his heart more than his life.

Can a free-spirited ceramic artist and a fierce swordsman trust each other enough to prevent disaster?

EXCERPT:
She tugged at his elbow. “Why are you being like this?”

His gaze met hers and then skittered away. “Like what?”

“Like you don’t want to talk about us and where we stand. Look, I said I’m sorry for not telling you about my trust fund. I-I really do want to give our marriage a chance. If it makes you feel better, I’ll refuse my inheritance.”

She’d thought about it long and hard, and that was the only offer she could make that would show him how she felt. Maybe they’d be short on money for a while, but she could apply for a scholarship and earn her education degree that way. And she still had her pottery studio.
She just couldn’t stand to lose him. He completed her and made her feel safe and cherished. She’d be devastated if he abandoned her. Erika clung to his arm as though the physical contact would convince him to remain.

“You would give up your family’s money for me?” A muscle in his jaw twitched as he gave her a sideways glance.

“If you’d decide to stay as a result, yes, I would.”

“I see.” Still he didn’t respond other than with terse words. His lips compressed, and he maintained his forward pace.

Maybe she’d been wrong about him. Maybe he didn’t really care about her at all. His mission was what mattered, and she’d merely been a means to an end. As soon as they vanquished Loki, he’d be free to return home.
