SYNOPSIS:
It’s been a few months since Jaycen McCain’s troubled wife fell victim to a sadistic killer. Losing Kelly Jo has haunted him deeply, and his failure to keep her safe has driven Jay to the brink of a bleak, self-destructive despair. But the small-town police detective has bigger problems to deal
with when a string of serial murders crop up on his home turf–murders with eerie similarities to the violence perpetrated on his wife.

Compelled to stop the killer and find much-needed answers about Kelly Jo’s final hours, Jay is forced to enlist the help of a woman too tempting for his own peace of mind: Kelly Jo’s pretty cousin, Sara St. James. Together, Jay and Sara embark on a pursuit for justice that will take them into an
underground world of dark places and dangerous, irresistible desires. As an unwanted passion kindles and combusts between them, the killer closes in, pulling Jay and Sara into the web of an evil that will rock them to their
core.

AUTHOR BIO

Fleeta Cunningham began writing at the age of eight, but she was telling stories before she was old enough to write them down, much to the dismay of various relatives who found her ‘tall tales’ less than believable. She found an outlet for her active imagination when a high school English teacher took an interest in her stories and class writings and suggested she join the school newspaper and yearbook.  After taking a degree in English Literature from Texas Tech, Fleeta was accepted at the University of Texas where she took a master’s degree in Library and Information Science. She began her career as a law librarian with the State of Texas and later worked with two major law firms in Houston. During those years she wrote a column for her professional newsletter, contributed to a number of publications for the legal industry, and sat on the advisory board of two publishers.

Following her time in the world of litigation, contracts, and torts, Fleeta returned to her home in Central Texas where she taught Enlish and history in a small private school for several years. The urge to write again became too strong to ignore. Since turning her energies to writing full time in 2006, Fleeta has had four books accepted for publication as well as articles and short stories.

A fifth generation Texan, Fleeta Cunningham has lived in a number of small Texas towns. Drawing on all of them, she created the fictional town of Santa Rita and its inhabitants. The Santa Rita Series includes  DON’T CALL ME DARLIN’, BLACK RAIN RISING, ELOPEMENT FOR ONE and HALF PAST MOURNING.  When she isn’t writing, she gives workshops and classes in creative writing. She is a frequent speaker at programs and community events. She also serves as the wedding coordinator for her church and chief housekeeper for her feline roommates.

SNEAK PEEK:

A tiny bell peeled as she entered. The shop consisted of a counter separating a small
waiting room from the area decorated for client portraits. A snow dappled backdrop, the same
one depicted in Sylvie and Deion’s portrait, draped the far wall. Further confirmation that they
had been here.

No one manned the counter, nor could she hear the sound of anyone approaching as a
result of the entry bell. The skin along the back of her neck crawled, and she rubbed it
impatiently.

“Hello?” she called.

Goose pimples rushed up her arms. Must be a ghost walking on her grave. Nothing to be
afraid of in a store open to the public in the middle of the afternoon. Through the plate glass
window, she watched pedestrians stroll by. If anything happened to her, someone would see.

Someone would hear her scream. Heavens. She needed to shake off this paranoia.
At five foot twelve inches tall, as her mother had always said six feet was too tall for a
woman, she was no shrinking violet. Tall and big-boned. Granted, some of the muscle she
carried had gotten soft since her retirement. But she still thought she cut an imposing figure. No
victim here.

In fact, just to be on the safe side… She dug her cellphone out of her pocket and scrolled
through the menus, looking for the most recent call from Lia. It never hurt to let someone know
her location.

After pressing the Talk button, nothing happened. Odd. No bars, no connectivity. She
glanced over her shoulder. No one had come out of the backroom to assist her. Perhaps they
were developing pictures? No, that didn’t make sense. Everything was digital these days. She’d
just go outside, make her call, then come back in.

With a shrug, she strode over to the door and pulled. It refused to open. Thinking she’d
pulled when she should have pushed, she shoved against the door. It still didn’t open.

What the hell?

She stepped back and heard an odd sound. A low hum. The room had darkened as well.
Looking around, she suddenly realized she could no longer see out the front windows. They had
darkened, becoming totally opaque. Probably bulletproof as well. Shit. Not that she carried a gun
these days.

This didn’t make any sense. This was a photography studio, for Christ’s sake, not a
government covert operation.

The squeal of a door behind her made her swirl around. She did a double-take. The
appearance of the woman in front of her didn’t make any sense. Tall, with her blond hair cut in a
bob–she felt as if she could be looking in a mirror.

“What the…” she began.

“Hello, Margaret,” a voice said. The mouth was hers; the voice wasn’t.

Despite her misgivings, she stepped toward the figure. Was this some elaborate practical
joke? However, when she looked into the blue eyes of the imposter, what she saw there made her
gasp. They weren’t the serene blue she saw in her own mirror. These eyes were pale, cold and
flat. The eyes of a killer.

Her cellphone rang and, without taking her eyes from her captor, she snatched it up to her
ear. “Hello, please help me! Hello!”

Feedback squealed from the speaker. The figure held up a small device where a red
button glowed on the display.

The fear she’d been struggling to repress sprang free. Her heart pounded painfully against
her ribcage and she couldn’t seem to draw in a full breath. Her nerves jangled, urging her to run,
to hide, to do something. Without options, she settled on doing something she’d never before
done in a situation like this.

She screamed.

Christine Morgan may seem normal enough on first glance, but she’s known to her daughter’s friends as the weird mother who throws birthday parties with themes like Fear Factor or Sweeney Todd, has medieval weapons hanging on the walls, and makes classroom visits to talk about writing scary stuff.

Her interests include pirates, Vikings, zombies, superheroes, British comedy, action movies, making nut-people crafts, fantasy role-playing games, cartoons, and horror novels. She also works the overnight shift in a psychiatric facility, which may explain a lot.

SNEAK PEEK:

Half-asleep but with a smile on her face, Erin headed for the bathroom. She knew her way now well enough to do so in the dark, padding softly along the familiar hallway.

The door to her office stood open, the room beyond a silent blackness but for the tiny varicolored lights and muted electronic hums of dozing computer equipment. The spare room’s door was shut. The rest of the house was still.

But it didn’t feel empty.

Which was silly. Of course it wasn’t empty. Gil was home. A nice hot shower had revived him and eased most of his aches long enough for them to enjoy dinner. He’d raved about the chicken, admitted that the gravy did have a hint of a burnt-dog-hair zing to it, and polished off two big pieces of cake along with most of the bottle of wine. They had taken the candles up to their bedroom and made love in their delicate flickering glow.

The poor guy had conked out thirty seconds after they finished, and now slept like a stone. He wasn’t snoring, wasn’t tossing and turning, wasn’t moving at all. He hadn’t even been able to pull up the covers. Erin had done it for him.

She used the toilet, washed her hands and face, drank a glass of water, and had just switched off the bathroom light again when she heard a sound overhead.

It sounded like a voice. A low, stifled moan.

Erin paused, with her hand still at the switch. She held her breath. Tensed. Poised. Listening.

Then she heard the creaking give of a board. A thump. Like a footfall?

She looked up, as if she possessed X-Ray vision and could see through solid walls. But all she saw was blank ceiling, lit only by the soft ambient moonlight through the bathroom window.

Raccoon. Raccoon in the attic.

When she’d gone up there with Noah, though, she had not seen anything to indicate that raccoons frequented the attic, or any way for them to get up there in the first place. No holes they could squeeze through. No food. Nothing to make nests with. Did raccoons even make nests? Was she thinking of rats?

There weren’t rats in the attic, either. Just that one old trap, untouched, the cheese used to bait it having long since crumbled to powder. No rats, no mice, no bats, no owls. Not even any spiders that she had seen. A few cobwebs, but old and wispy and nearly intangible.

Nothing lived in the attic.

But, if nothing lived in the attic, and the night wasn’t windy enough to get the weathervane swinging and squeaking on the roof or the branches of the old oak scraping against the siding, what had made the noise?

Oh, now, quit it!

She told herself to march right on up there and take a look. After all, it wasn’t like there was anything to be afraid of. Gil was just down the hall.

And, really, you’d think that if she was going to be frightened by weird spooky noises in the night, it would have happened while he was away. She had been all alone in the house. If ever there’d been an optimum time for a ghost to make an appearance, it would have been then. But had she heard anything? Had she felt anything?

Nothing at all.

Now, though, her lungs pounded from holding her breath and her eyes bulged and dried out because she didn’t want to blink. Her skin was one big puckered sheet of gooseflesh. Her ears hurt from listening so hard.

Another thump. Definitely sounded like a footstep. A stealthy footstep.

Go back to the bedroom and wake up Gil?

She couldn’t do that. He needed his rest. She didn’t have the heart to wake him, especially for no good reason.

A board creaked …

SYNOPSIS:

Tevan Zaber wants to be a detective. But how far is he willing to go to get there? Thrust into the dark underworld of real vampires, reality begins to blur into the society of role-playing. Can Krystal Braxton, who wrestles with her own demons, save Tevan from becoming one of them? Together they must infiltrate the occult covens to save the city from a blood-thirsty killer resurrected from a year’s old case as they enlist the help of Fairview Park’s lieutenant, Cole Kincaid.

THE HOUR BEFORE DAWN is the thrilling follow-up to DEADLY OBSESSION.

REVIEWS:

If possible, THE HOUR BEFORE DAWN is even better than DEADLY OBSESSION. Patricia Rasey has done a fantastic job in continuing DEADLY OBSESSION in this story. THE HOUR BEFORE DAWN would do well as a stand-alone novel as well. Again, we have a flawed hero, dealing with his failed marriage. Add to this, one really wounded heroine in Krystal, trying to deal with the abuse of her father, and we have one fantastic story, in addition to the solving of the murders and delving into the Vampyre Society of today. If you like romantic suspense, don’t miss this one!

Chere Gruver for Romance Junkies http://www.romancejunkies.com/

4 1/2 Stars! Patricia Rasey takes you on a wild ride through the dark side of life with this intriguing story. Prepare to be blown away by the killer. If you weren’t a fan before, you definitely will be now!

Kathy Boswell for RT Book Reviews http://www.rtbookreviews.com/

Just the creative voyeuristic thrill of briefly living in this world, by way of the path blazed by author Patricia Rasey, is enough to make THE HOUR BEFORE DAWN a must read. Daring and bold, Rasey presents the shadowy world of vampyres with a unique darkness that proves mesmerizing. The style is fiercely unrelenting, marking Rasey indelibly as a harsh truth teller. Although her genre is fiction, her characters are real and frightening, and not even main characters are safe from the evil that haunts Rasey’s work. Further, Rasey’s exploration of self-mutilation is both knowledgeable and tasteful, lending a shocking vulnerability to a striking character. Indeed, THE HOUR BEFORE DAWN is gripping, gritty, and fascinating, coming very highly recommended.

Cindy Penn for Word Weaving

THE HOUR BEFORE DAWN is a thrill-read, intense, fast and unpredictable. The reader will be tempted to “close your eyes and don’t look” but from the first grizzly murder to the last, the reader is glued to the pages waiting breathlessly for the killer to be unmasked and brought down.

For an adrenaline rushing read, I highly recommend THE HOUR BEFORE DAWN.

SNEAK PEEK:

A knock sounded on his door, startling him. Since moving here, Tev had not had a single visitor. No one besides the department knew where he lived. Fearing something had happened to his family, Tev jumped up from his chair and opened the door. He wasn’t sure what he expected, but certainly not a fang-toothed Raven.

Tev left the door cracked, not inviting the young man in. “How the hell did you find out where I lived? Taken to following me?”

He’d need to be more careful of his whereabouts and surroundings in the future. If his cover were blown, they wouldn’t have a chance in hell of catching the killer.

“You going to invite me in?”

Role-player or real, Tevan wasn’t sure, but either way, Raven would not step across his threshold. The rules stated a vampire must first be invited. “Tell me why I should? You have business here?”

Raven leaned a shoulder against the doorjamb and crossed his arms over his chest. “Just wanting to find out your angle.”

Tev knew Raven sized him up. He wondered if he thought him a threat where Krystal was concerned. Narrowing his gaze, Tev asked again, “How did you find out where I lived?”

“Super-natural powers.”

“I don’t buy that, and I don’t think you do either.”

Raven chuckled. “I followed you home from the club.”

“Why?”

He shrugged. “I was intrigued and a bit skeptical, if you will.”

Tevan knew a big share of male vampyres were gay or bisexual. He hoped Raven’s intrigue didn’t include being interested in Tev sexually. “I’m not into guys.”

“Who says I am?” Raven challenged.

“You followed me home.”

He held his arms out to the side, booted feet crossed, in a Christ-like pose. “I said I was intrigued, not interested. Besides, I knew you weren’t into guys.”

“How’s that?”

“Krystal.”

“What about her?”

“You going to let me in, or do I have to stand out here all day?”

Tev opened the door. “Come in,” he invited, picking up shirts and pants littering the floor and throwing them into a basket in the corner. “Sorry, I didn’t expect company.”

Raven walked slowly around the room, taking in every corner. He picked up objects, glanced carefully at them, before returning them to their spot. Tev felt as if he were being assessed. Every inch of his existence scrutinized by this man.
Stopping in front of the computer, Raven glanced at the screen. “Looks like you need to get out more.”

“That’s the problem…I don’t go out much at all.”

“Any reason?”

Tev took the opening Raven offered. “I don’t identify with many.”

Raven looked up from the screen. “Meaning?”

“I live a life contrary to what people perceive as normal. I walk at night. I hunt.”

Raven appeared to study his face, judging how much of Tev’s self-profession to believe. “And what is it you hunt?”

“Life force. Raw energy.”

“Hunting is a synonym for pursuing, certainly not something that requires the other’s consent. You take without permission?”

“I don’t need approval.”

Raven pursed his lips. “A true hunter. Either you’re of the Blood as you say, or a poser. Which is it?”

“What do you think?”

Raven crossed his arms over his chest again and looked at Tev. “I don’t know what to think. That’s why I’m here.”

“You think you can somehow lay proof to my claim?”

Raven shrugged. “Depends on what you have to prove. Can you smell me?”

“I smell the thick blood running through your veins, if that’s what you mean.”

“Do you desire it?”

Shit.

Raven reached into his leather jacket’s pocket and pulled out a shiny straight razor still in its cardboard sheath. “Prove it.”
If he told Raven “no,” then chances were that he’d never believe Tevan was of the Blood. He certainly couldn’t use disease as an excuse, because most true vampyres didn’t fear death, they embraced it. But getting AIDS scared the hell out of him.

Before Tevan could come up with an excuse about why he could not do what Raven offered, a thin red line ran down the man’s arm. Blood seeped from the cut and dripped to the floor. Raven held out his arm. He raised a brow in challenge. “Hungry?”

Tev swallowed; his stomach quivered in disgust. If he ever got his hands on Whitey’s throat, it wouldn’t be too soon.

Tevan had just backed himself into a corner. And unless he did some fast-talking, he’d be forced to corroborate his affirmations. Drinking blood had not been part of his deal with Whitey. The thought of it sent his stomach rolling….

SNEAK PEEK:

Seeing Alexander that close to Cora made Nick’s skin crawl. He didn’t waste any pleasantries on the man. “Did Jerry find the money so soon?” Alexander snorted. “Hardly.”

“So, what’s the news?”

“He still claims someone else stole it, he’s investigating. My guess is he’ll get himself killed.”

Nick kept a straight face and resisted the urge to punch the cabin wall next to him, when he really wanted to hit Alexander in that straight, pointed nose of his.

“Did I ruin your plans by showing up?” Alexander’s mouth twisted. “Don’t bother pretending you’re not trying to get her in bed.”

Nick’s blood boiled hotter at Alexander’s crude words.

“I’m just doing what my father needs me to.” Nick forced his tensed shoulders to relax and folded his arms across his chest, hoping to avoid further conflict with a less defensive stance. “Keith wants her up here for a while, so this is where we’re staying.”

“I don’t buy it, and I don’t know why Keith does.” Alexander wanted a fight, Nick thought, and a reason to grab Cora and take off with her.
Nick shrugged, deciding it best not to goad Alexander.

“Keith doesn’t need a lawyer around,” Alexander said. “You know that, don’t you? You walked away and you’re not getting back in.”

“Don’t be so sure. Maybe a lawyer in the family could do some good.”

Alexander was so stunned, he took a step backwards. Nick mentally kicked himself for giving Alexander another reason to keep a close watch on them.

“What do you want with her? Why did you really get her involved?” The other man laughed, “You know it was the only way to get Jerry to find the money without going to the police. We can’t let information like this get out to the press.”

SNEAK TEASE:
In four months, I am going to become a mother.

“You felt the baby move?” Claudia asks, her eyes lighting up.

“Mmm-hmm.”

Claudia squeals in delight then places her hand gently on my ever-growing stomach, as if hoping to catch the baby in action. “I can’t believe it. Before we know it, you’re going to have a baby.”

“I know. Amazing how things can change in a year.”

Last year, I was in the dumps when my marriage ended. My husband, Charles, was having an affair. But worse than that, I found out he was embezzling money from the Wishes Come True charity, where he’d been a member of the board. Dom was an auditor investigating the embezzlement and, long story short, we fell hard for each other. One minute, my life had been at its lowest point being married to a man who didn’t love me, and who had become the subject of a huge public scandal. The next, I was on cloud nine, never imagining that I could be this happy.

The happiness of the moment dissipates as my eyes land on the newspaper Claudia has spread on the table. “You think she knows?” I ask.

Claudia shrugs. “Maybe. Probably. She works in the news. She must have heard something at the station.”

“Then again, maybe not,” I say. “It’s not like she does the entertainment beat. And she doesn’t work weekends. So…” I let my statement trail off as I take a seat across from Claudia, figuring my words are wishful thinking at best.

I look at the picture in the Atlanta Journal Constitution she’s been reading, upside-down from my vantage point. But I can still make out the photo and the headline: One of Atlanta’s Most Eligible Bachelors Is Off the Market.

“Then again,” Claudia begins, “even if she’s heard, it’s not like it’s a big deal. She’s over Rugged.”

I meet Claudia’s eyes and stare at her for a long moment, wondering if she believes her own words. Sure, Lishelle has told us over and over again that she doesn’t want a relationship with Rugged. She has stressed that he was simply a fling. And granted, she’s the one who broke up with him. But still, I have never quite believed that she wasn’t really into him.

Lishelle went through a bitch of a breakup with a guy she was crazy about before she met Rugged—although breakup isn’t the right word, since Glenn wasn’t hers to begin with. I know how hard it was for me to learn my husband was cheating on me, so I can only imagine that it was far more devastating for Lishelle to discover that her college flame—the one she still held a torch for—lied about being married when he came back into her life years later. The prick had used her for her money, stringing her along real good until he was able to steal a ton of cash from her. Ever since that betrayal—and considering she was also married before but divorced because her husband cheated on her—she’s been understandably guarding her heart.

At least, that’s my opinion. Because with Rugged—a local rap sensation and six years her junior—she was a different person. Happier, more vibrant. And she hasn’t quite been the same since she told him that their relationship could never go anywhere, and subsequently ended things with him.

Still, I say to Claudia, “I guess you’re right. She’s the one who broke up with him.”

“Exactly,” Claudia stresses, and then her eyes flit over my shoulder. Quickly, she grabs the newspaper, folds it and tosses it under the booth. Which tells me Lishelle has arrived.

And it also tells me that what Claudia just said—that the news of Rugged’s engagement will be no big deal to Lishelle—is hogwash.

SNEAK PEEK:

In a secluded corner of the Rock Heaven restaurant, Philippe brooded. He struggled with the notion that so many people had expressed their sympathy for a man he never knew existed until his death. He checked the room, once again seeking the long dark brown curls and slim figure of Roxanne St-Clair.

He braced himself when he noticed her. She was heading his way and her ankle length black dress accentuating her slim waist.

She switched her cola to her other hand and extended her hand. “I’m Roxanne St-Clair.”

Despite noticing anger in her eyes, he shook her hand. He wondered how her soft hands would feel caressing the rest of his body. Philippe mentally shook himself. “Philippe Lafrance, but you already know that.” To his annoyance, silently she settled in the seat beside him and toyed with the straw in her drink.

Finally, she shrugged, “I didn’t know George had a grandson. Imagine my surprise when his lawyer told us the news a few days ago.”

Her comment hit a sore point. He averted his gaze. Past experience taught him raw emotions left a person vulnerable. It was the last thing he wanted this woman to pick up on, his vulnerability. Anger he could deal with, but sympathy infuriated him. He’d already spotted it on her face. If she knew how much he hurt…

Philippe drained the last of his beer. “That makes two of us.”

Her eyes widened in shock at the news, only to shrink into small slits. Sharp as a whip, she’d picked up on his sarcasm.

“I have a hard time believing that,” said Roxanne harshly.

“This will come as a surprise, but I really don’t care what you or anyone else believes.” He met her glare with one of his own. “So what was the bastard really like?”

He winced at her sudden sharp intake of breath and instantly regretted the slip. Her eyes darkened to a deep hazel. His words now lay between them like a heavy cloth ready to smother them both.

“Don’t you dare speak of George like that. You have no right to criticize him, especially on the day we buried him.”
