BUTTERFLY GARDEN by ANNETTE BLAIR (historical romance with sensuality)

THE REVOLVING BOOK FRIDAY EDITION IS THE SENSUAL HISTORICAL ROMANCE “BUTTERFLY GARDEN” by BEST SELLING AUTHOR ANNETTE BLAIR!

POSTED DEC. 30TH, 2011

Joanna D’Angelo: I am a great fan of Annette Blair’s writing – I read her previous historical romance “Jacob’s Return” set in an Amish community and all I can say is Annette’s stories are lush with sensuality and rich with emotion. Her books flow with the beauty of a fine romantic film.

SYNOPSIS:

Amishwoman Sara Lapp, all but shunned for studying with the local doctor to become a midwife, is shocked that, after months of waiting, her first call comes from “Mad” Adam Zuckerman, a self-appointed outcast. Adam doesn’t want her to attend at a birth, but to tend to his children because his wife has died in childbed.

Adam wants to love his children, but he is afraid he will hurt them in the way his father hurt him. Without his late wife, Abby, to protect them, Adam must find someone else to care for the girls. He can think of only one woman brave enough, Spinster Sara Lapp, the little midwife whose passion for things beyond her control is greater than is good for her.

Though Sara knows the four little girls belong with their father, how can she leave them with a man who seems not to care for them? As much as she loves and wants the girls, she will only take them long enough to teach Adam to love them. Then Adam falls from the barn loft and Sara moves in to look after him. But in the Amish community a man and woman living together must marry or be shunned. The Bishop takes a stand and Sara and Adam are forced to face the greatest challenge of their lives.

REVIEWS:

“Fans of the TV show “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” will adore this novel! Sara came across to me as almost a mirror image of Dr. Quinn. She is strong when need be (stubborn), stands up for those in need (sharp tongued), and has so much love to give everyone. She also must deal with the Amish ordnung (rules) which makes everything near impossible. I found myself cheering her on to victory. The author, Annette Blair, has a real writing talent. She inserts tiny things that the reader does not immediately notice, but makes the reader come to care for the characters as if they were kin. You may need tissues nearby at some points of the story. Another award winner that I cannot recommend highly enough.” Detra Fitch, HUNTRESS REVIEWS

“Annette Blair writes a wonderfully insightful Amish historical romance … Fans who appreciate a deep look at a different lifestyle will enjoy THE BUTTERFLY GARDEN & JACOB’S RETURN for their deep look at the Amish …” Harriet Klausner

“Those of you who are fans of Annette Blair or Amish romances will be thrilled with her newest book! It seems like forever since Blair’s first Amish romance JACOB’S RETURN was on the shelves. Her second … set in Ohio this time, is every bit as good as her first. I found myself transported …” Shelby, ARR

“Sensual and thematic tension, heartache, and Annette Blair’s fine writing and wit combine in equal measure to make “The Butterfly Garden” a unique, romantic, and thoroughly pleasing novel. It’s a keeper.” Michelle Buonfiglio, Romance: B(u)Y the Book <http://www.wnbc.com/romance/index.html> , wnbc entertainment

“A love story as memorable as the characters who share it… richly detailed…warm, witty, touching. A top-notch read. A gifted writer. Debbie Jett, RRAH

SNEAK PEEK:

“Max.” His name rolled around her tongue and she gripped the steering wheel tighter when her belly did a little flip-flop. She wondered if he’d stayed on his family’s orchard. Max’s dream had been to turn it into a profitable wine-making operation and it had been in the fledgling stages of transitioning into a vineyard when she left. Kara hadn’t kept track of Maxwell Grimes Stone II for two reasons. One being her focus on her own culinary career, and the other had been something she still refused to think about and a big reason why she had stayed away so long. She was sure Max had no idea what had really transpired to make her decide to leave. But coming home made her wonder.

SNEAK PEEK:

It had been months since he’d last seen the man. He’d come so close to asking Blue Eyes out on a date. The last time they’d met, Ian had planned on discovering his favorite food so he could book a table somewhere. Ian would have asked him out that night if Blue Eyes hadn’t received a call from his soon-to-be ex.

Ian had chased him out of the shop. The last thing Ian needed was to be an experiment for a straight guy. He’d never be able to handle that again, not after Kyle.
Ian tried to break eye contact but couldn’t. Blue Eyes let his briefcase fall to his side and straightened. Another gust of wind blew hard, sending his jacket flying around his legs. It was cold, wet and not a fit night for anyone.

If Ian had any sense, he would grab his things and go upstairs. He didn’t need a man in his life right now. He certainly didn’t need some straight guy playing around with him, only to throw him aside when the next cute chick came around.

Blue Eyes walked forward, coming to the edge of the curb but not crossing the street. Ian set his pen down and tapped his fingers on the countertop. Blue Eyes stepped onto the road, not even bothering to look for traffic, and crossed.

Ian’s heart pounded with every step closer Blue Eyes took. He’d forgotten how handsome Blue Eyes was, how intense he was one moment, only to be grinning and easy in the next. Ian couldn’t move, his gaze locked on the other man until he stood outside the door to the shop.

Neither of them said a word, simply stared at one another. Finally, Ian got to his feet and walked around the counter. He stopped at the end of the aisle, frozen. Beyond the kitchen to his right was the staircase leading up to his apartment. To the left was the front door and Blue Eyes in the cold night.

Ian took a deep breath and went left.

REVIEWS:

Book review from Melissa Bradley @ Melissa’s Imaginarium

“This book is savagely beautiful. Julia Phillips Smith puts the monster back into vampire.  She weaves a spell over her readers with her subtly brilliant dialogue and lush descriptions. I could smell the forest, hear the crackle of the fires and oh my God can she write fight scenes in all their bloody, violent glory.”

http://melissasimaginarium.blogspot.com/2011/11/saint-sanguinus-by-julia-phillips-smith.html

Book review from Travis Cody @ Trav’s Thoughts

“Her vampires are dark and ravenous; monsters more in the tradition of the vampire as deadly, dangerous and blood thirsty. But it’s not a horror story. It’s a dark romantic adventure with appeal to men and women. All together an outstanding debut.”

SYNOPSIS

An elite brotherhood stands between humans and vampires, preventing one side from annihilating the other. Who are called to this service? Only those warriors who curse God with their dying breath.

Welsh warrior Peredur falls to a spear before he can claim Tanwen for his bride. Raging on the battlefield, Peredur utters the curse that seals his fate and leads him to another life. Using the power of a saint whose bone makes up an amulet, Peredur takes on the trials to become a true member of the brethren. Yet his need for the chieftain’s daughter Tanwen still burns.

Tanwen resists her father’s command to take a husband. The only one who understands her sorrow is Cavan, the wise woman’s son. When he promises that he can reunite her with her beloved, she agrees to his terms. But does Tanwen truly understand the depth of the price that must be paid?

SNEAK PEEK:

Peredur hung forward, his arms stretched awkwardly behind him, bound behind a large tree. Now fully awake, he tried to stand upright and surge forward, but the bonds held.
His brethren gathered all around the tree. Melnak who stood farthest away in the shadows, pulled his amulet from where it hid in his robes then lifted it over his head. As he approached, Melnak said, “God our Father, our brother now descends into the trial you have given him.”
The brethren intoned, “Our Father, hear us,” just as Peredur’s body began to jerk away from the amulet as though compelled to do so. Melnak brought the shining polished bone to rest against the bottom rib of Peredur’s left side.
For a moment Peredur couldn’t see. All before him was blinding white light.
When he came to, Peredur sensed he was somewhere else entirely, no longer bound to the tree.
In the distance, a figure waited for him, a miserable bent man barely clothed in rags. Peredur tried to join him, but at the hint of motion his legs shot through with fiery tendrils. The figure turned his face to see who approached.
Such a man. His face held the expression of one who had endured a torturous vigil, rather like the one from which Peredur could not free himself. But the face also held a beauty that hurt to see. Peredur wanted to turn his face away, but the gaze of those tormented eyes held him and despite the pain, he forced a step or two forward.
I’m coming, Peredur tried to tell him, but the bent figure lowered his head as if overcome by agony after all. Peredur grit his teeth and pushed forward with all his might.
His feet finally moved, but suddenly it seemed the saint was miles from where Peredur could reach him. Peredur’s heart sank.
He remembered in his boyhood, how heavy the sword had been at first, when the sword master made him swing it again and again. His legs just now were the same. They rebelled against his commands.
Move! he shouted at them. Move!
Anger at the injustice of it coursed through him. As the anger rose, the binding stiffness released his legs and his steps grew easier.
Peredur wanted to race to the saint’s side, but what use would there be in that? Now that he could move, he walked with dread toward the fallen bundle of rags and limbs. Kneeling there, he took the saint in his arms and brushed the matted hair from the bruised face.
Saint Cittinus’ eyes fluttered open.
Peredur looked down at the youthful saint in his arms, made old before his time by the captivity and mistreatment he’d endured. As if for the first time, Peredur saw the clear white line of a scar across the saint’s neck, as if a rope had choked him there.
Saint Cittinus looked into Peredur’s eyes. Those cracked lips moved. Instead of ‘I thirst,’ the saint spoke clearly, if softly. “We have no one else to fear,” he said, “but our Lord God. Who is in Heaven.”
Peredur nodded. He stayed as he was and watched the saint expire before his eyes. All the while his angel never took his hand from Peredur’s shoulder.
Saint Cittinus faded from Peredur’s grip, though he still felt the weight of him in his arms.  No sooner than he’d seen it, but Peredur came to.
He found himself still straining in his bonds against the tree. With breathtaking intensity, the pain in his rib returned. Melnak held the amulet to him still, with unyielding grimness.
He thought of the scar upon the saint’s neck. Instead of struggling and cursing as Peredur had done on the battlefield against the spear, Cittinus had accepted the wound that had given him the scar.
It was time to stop fighting.

SNEAK PEEK:
I felt a tremendous surge of energy course through my body. Off to my left, a shadowy outline took form.

Who are you? Why are you disturbing me?

I took a step forward. “I’m someone who can help you cross planes, daemon. I’m here to help you find peace.”

Ah, now I can sense you. A white witch. Hmmm. Too bad I’m not alive, you’d make one tasty meal. Get out of here and leave me be.

“Sorry. I can’t do that.”

I crossed my arms over my chest and shivered slightly. It seemed I’d never get used to the chill that came with the territory, but I forced my discomfort to the back of my mind and advanced further into the room. “What’s your name?”

Phenor. Now go away.

“No can do, pal. I’m being paid good money to exorcise you. Now talk to me. Tell me what happened here.”

I said no.

“Hey, I sympathize. Really, I do. Taken before your time—even though it was most likely your fault—“

Why do you assume so?

“Oh, come on, we all know how you Friezes are. You’d sell your mother if the opportunity were right. Plus, you’re all stubborn as all get out. I know you don’t want to leave this mortal coil, but face it, bucko—you’re dead. It’s over. Go out with some dignity.” I paused. “Your aura is stifling. You must have pissed off someone pretty powerful, huh?”

You’re a pushy one, aren’t you?

I felt a rush of hot, fetid air. Promising. I’d made him sigh.

You want to know so bad, fine. I had A little disagreement with the head daemon. We both found the same woman attractive, and she chose me.

I nodded. Nine out of ten daemon-slayings were over women, usually mortal women who found the bad-boy perennially attractive.

“I feel your pain. You won, but you lost. Anyway, you have to give it up now. You have to let yourself go onto the next plane.”

Why? So I can let a low-life troll have my home? Never!

I squared my shoulders.  Now came the part where I made them realize they had no choice but to go toward the light, to a far, far better place. A speech I’d said so often over the last year and a half, I could recite it backwards in my sleep.

“I understand how you feel, but you have to come to grips with the fact you’re dead now, and this place doesn’t belong to you anymore. You’ve got to come to grips with your situation and leave this plane you’re trapped in. Trust me, once you let go and find peace, you’re going to end up in a much better place. I can help you do it, but you’ve got to cooperate.”

Pretty words. But I doubt where I’m headed would be considered a better place.

Oh, goody. He had attitude. Just what I needed – a difficult daemon.

I heard a sound behind me and whirled. An ominous dark shadow hung in the doorway, floating back and forth. As I watched, it stretched, elongated into another form, one with scales, talons for fingers, and deep red eyes.

Yep. Definitely Frieze.

SNEAK PEEK:

A tiny bell peeled as she entered. The shop consisted of a counter separating a small
waiting room from the area decorated for client portraits. A snow dappled backdrop, the same
one depicted in Sylvie and Deion’s portrait, draped the far wall. Further confirmation that they
had been here.

No one manned the counter, nor could she hear the sound of anyone approaching as a
result of the entry bell. The skin along the back of her neck crawled, and she rubbed it
impatiently.

“Hello?” she called.

Goose pimples rushed up her arms. Must be a ghost walking on her grave. Nothing to be
afraid of in a store open to the public in the middle of the afternoon. Through the plate glass
window, she watched pedestrians stroll by. If anything happened to her, someone would see.

Someone would hear her scream. Heavens. She needed to shake off this paranoia.
At five foot twelve inches tall, as her mother had always said six feet was too tall for a
woman, she was no shrinking violet. Tall and big-boned. Granted, some of the muscle she
carried had gotten soft since her retirement. But she still thought she cut an imposing figure. No
victim here.

In fact, just to be on the safe side… She dug her cellphone out of her pocket and scrolled
through the menus, looking for the most recent call from Lia. It never hurt to let someone know
her location.

After pressing the Talk button, nothing happened. Odd. No bars, no connectivity. She
glanced over her shoulder. No one had come out of the backroom to assist her. Perhaps they
were developing pictures? No, that didn’t make sense. Everything was digital these days. She’d
just go outside, make her call, then come back in.

With a shrug, she strode over to the door and pulled. It refused to open. Thinking she’d
pulled when she should have pushed, she shoved against the door. It still didn’t open.

What the hell?

She stepped back and heard an odd sound. A low hum. The room had darkened as well.
Looking around, she suddenly realized she could no longer see out the front windows. They had
darkened, becoming totally opaque. Probably bulletproof as well. Shit. Not that she carried a gun
these days.

This didn’t make any sense. This was a photography studio, for Christ’s sake, not a
government covert operation.

The squeal of a door behind her made her swirl around. She did a double-take. The
appearance of the woman in front of her didn’t make any sense. Tall, with her blond hair cut in a
bob–she felt as if she could be looking in a mirror.

“What the…” she began.

“Hello, Margaret,” a voice said. The mouth was hers; the voice wasn’t.

Despite her misgivings, she stepped toward the figure. Was this some elaborate practical
joke? However, when she looked into the blue eyes of the imposter, what she saw there made her
gasp. They weren’t the serene blue she saw in her own mirror. These eyes were pale, cold and
flat. The eyes of a killer.

Her cellphone rang and, without taking her eyes from her captor, she snatched it up to her
ear. “Hello, please help me! Hello!”

Feedback squealed from the speaker. The figure held up a small device where a red
button glowed on the display.

The fear she’d been struggling to repress sprang free. Her heart pounded painfully against
her ribcage and she couldn’t seem to draw in a full breath. Her nerves jangled, urging her to run,
to hide, to do something. Without options, she settled on doing something she’d never before
done in a situation like this.

She screamed.
