THE HAT by BABETTE HUGHES (murder/mystery)

Friday’s Revolving Book is the mystery THE HAT by BABETTE HUGHES.
GENRE: Murder/Mystery/Romance/Historical

Boardwalk Empire Era Novel Takes First Prize in Historical Fiction!

BUY IT ONLINE:

PUBLISHER: Sunstone Press http://www.sunstonepress.com/
SYNOPSIS: “The Hat” has its roots in personal history. What lends this novel its authenticity is that its author, Babette Hughes, is the daughter of a bootlegger who was murdered by the Mafia when she was an infant. Hughes (née Rosen) spent years piecing together her father’s bootlegging career and murder, despite her mother’s attempt to hide the truth. “The Hat” draws directly on the drama of Hughes’s search for the truth, as told in her acclaimed memoir, Lost And Found. The novel begins in 1931 with the brief, chilling murder of the godfather of the Jewish bootlegging world, Ben Gold. The killer disappears without a trace and Chapter Two, in flashback, introduces Kate Brady, who has just been fired from her Depression-era job working at Shapiro’s Bakery. She has little hope of a future until she meets the magnetic, wealthy Ben Gold, who immediately identifies her as his future wife. They marry in a brilliantly described wedding.

The charged love affair between Kate and Gold’s employee, Bobby Keane, and their struggle to escape the dangerous Gold, is revealed later in the book. Ultimately, “The Hat” is the story of Kate’s struggle for lost innocence, selfhood, and freedom. Of courage in the struggle with evil. Of bravery in the face of danger. And of being led into daylight
by the restoring power of love.

REVIEWS:
“Kelly combines wit, innocent sensuality, and seduction in this tale of a forced marriage between a beautiful plain-speaking pacifist Quaker and a handsome war hero who inherits a rundown earldom. In 1817, Phoebe Linville leaves joyless Philadelphia and the strident lectures of her half-brother for a new life in London under the loving protection of her aristocratic grandfather. When her grandfather dies, she becomes the “possession” of Maj. Lucas Stanton, the new Lord Merritt. A challenging adventure ensues when a determined Phoebe and stubborn Lucas wind up in a compromising position that requires them to wed. Compassionate Phoebe has her hands full, between loving a lord whose heart was broken by another and hiding secrets about smugglers. Regency fans will enjoy the lessons on Christmas traditions, the art of seduction, and the triumph of reconciliation and love.” ~ Publishers Weekly

Author Bio:
Dayna Leigh Cheser

Writing ‘runs in the family.’ My mother is a multi-published non-fiction author, and my two brothers make a living writing, one as a newspaperman, the other as a copywriter. My sister edits her church newsletter.

My father was a school teacher/reading specialist/school principal when I was little. During story-time one night when I was four years old, I stopped him and asked how he said the same thing every time he read that story to me. That night, he started teaching me to read. It began a life-long love affair between books and me—for that, I am grateful.

In junior high, I wrote short stories to entertain classmates. In high school, one English assignment was to write my autobiography. In the teacher-specified chapter entitled ‘Future Plans,’ being a published writer topped the list.

After a college professor told me I ‘couldn’t write my way out of a paper bag,’ I stopped writing for many years. Then, in the late 1970s, I wrote an article for “World Radio News” (San Diego, CA) about our amateur radio club providing communications for a March of Dimes Walkathon.

In early 2002, between jobs and wanting to write, I sought a third-shift position and used the ‘free time’ to write what became ‘Janelle’s Time.’ When it was complete, I shelved it. In 2009, the WIP came off the shelf. By August 2011, it was ready—at last—for submission.

In 2009, I started a Twitter account, @Writers_Cafe. I feel as if I’ve earned a degree in ‘book publishing’ since then! You can learn so much from 15,000 followers.

I penned an article about @RileyCarney, a Colorado teen, and very prolific YA fantasy author, who heads her own non-profit literacy project. Never officially published, countless people have seen it, thanks to Twitter retweets and some carefully chosen email inboxes.

On New Year’s Day, 2010, I went ‘live’ with my blog. It has evolved into a combination of chronicling my writing journey and hopefully helpful posts on publishing industry topics.

Janelle’s Time is Book 1 of my TIME Series. Book 2, ‘Moria’s Time’ was my NaNoWriMo project for 2011. I hope to have it ready for submission in late 2012 or early 2013. The remaining books are: ‘Adelle’s Time’ (2012 NaNoWriMo project), ‘Logan’s Time (a WIP),’ and ‘Clarissa’s Time’ (2013 NaNoWriMo project).

I’m very excited about the release of ‘Janelle’s Time.’ It’s the culmination of a life-long dream—and is only the beginning of my retirement career.

My husband, Pete, and I have been married over forty-four years—no children. We lived in New England all our lives until 1992, when we moved to southwest Florida.

REVIEWS:
Reviews on Barnes and Noble: http://tinyurl.com/9qxbkjg

“Loved the opening! You can feel the sexual tension on the very first page. I also liked this idea of having the heroine competing in the same sport as the hero. And against each other! In the opening scene thery’re competing against each other in a mixed doubles match. It’s always the guy who’s the athlete and the heroine is in pr, a journalist or an event planner. Lizzie’s a great heroine. She’s got moxie!”

“I was hooked right from the beginning. Let’s say that the massage on the first page got me ready. And I was not disappointed. Neither will you be! The thing that I liked about this romance is that it really was a romance between Lizzy and Jack. So many so-called romances have their heroes and heroines getting it on before they’ve even got a groove going. But It’s a Love Game gets you going from the get-go with its hot sexual tension and smoldering romantic conflict.”
