Sneak Peek: The Possession by J.D. Spikes (YA paranormal)

Secret Journals Posession 1400x2100Today’s Sneak Peek is from the YA paranormal The Possession by Lachesis author J.D. Spikes.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT:
Daphne Wentworth is almost seventeen, definitely a red head, and most likely the tallest girl in her class, which is awkward to say the least when it comes to dating boys in her school. But she doesn’t have to worry about school for the next two months since she’s spending the summer at her aunt Dwill’s lighthouse in Maine. What she does have to worry about is seeing ghosts in the lighthouse cemetery, having strange dreams, and hearing the voices of star-crossed lovers who lived two-hundred years ago. And then there’s a local boy named Zach Philbrook who works for her aunt. He’s too gorgeous for his own good. He’s also very tall, with midnight black hair, and the most beautiful indigo blue eyes Daphne has ever seen. Zach is treated like an outcast by the local teens in town. He’s Micmac and therefore not “one of the gang”. Daphne can’t help being drawn to his strength, especially considering that he’s had to live his entire life dealing with ignorance. But the local teens aren’t the only trouble-makers in town. As Zach and Daphne get closer, the lighthouse ghost lovers begin haunting them. When Daphne and Zach try to figure out how to fight them, the spirits get bolder and more dangerous.

EXCERPT:
The cemetery wasn’t far and wasn’t scary. Not to me. Just a scattering of old stones with ancient memories written on them. People long gone to another life and no one here who remembers them.
I dropped my canvas shoulder bag of goods on the ground near the gate. Wrought iron and rusted, it leaned into the cemetery boundaries at a precarious angle. Thank God I didn’t have to push it open . . . I’d have probably landed on the ground with a rusted spiral in my gut. This place was unfamiliar to me, except in passing. Though I’d known of the cemetery’s existence, I’d never gone in. I had too much to do in the land of the living for my short time here. No one ever came out here, so what difference did the overgrowth make? Aunt begged to differ and insisted I clean the place up. The lighthouse was two hundred years old this summer, she reminded me, and the cemetery belonged to the lighthouse. So, on a bright June day, I found myself alone in a somewhat decrepit cemetery in a clearing in the woods. I made my way around the ancient stones in an attempt to put off the start of my project. Most were upright and clear enough of the tangle of brush that a portion of the inscription could be read. One small stone, nearly buried in the overgrown grass at the north corner, caught my eye. I flattened enough of the green to reveal the single word Sarah, and beneath it Age 3 Months. Sadness flashed through me, unexpectedly. There were babies buried here? I slipped the hand pruners from my back pocket where I’d stuck them and carefully snipped the grass down in front of the headstone. I pulled viney growth from the top corner of the stone, revealing a W. and a P. Sarah W.P. My hand cramped as I diligently snipped away at the grass, clearing the plot. The screech of the gate would have warned me . . . had the gate been in better repair. With its useless tilt, however, I never heard him coming. The bag dropping next to me on the mixed pile of living and dead debris announced his presence. I flipped to the side, tripping myself with my legs, but managed to keep the pruners in front of me. I pointed them into the air in front of my face. Blue-black eyes studied me, one hand hooked into his pants pocket by the thumb, the other paused in front of him, fingers splayed where it had dropped the bag. In books you always read about these moments. Crickets clicked, or birds called, or someone’s watch ticked, marking time. Maybe all three. In real life, the only thing you really hear until you recognize that person is your own heavy breathing, that being indicative of the fact that you are in the middle of nowhere with no possible help nearby. So how do you protect yourself from something that isn’t really there?

What inspires your writing by Beverly Adam (historical romance author – Regency romance)

Lady and the Captain 200x300Our guest blogger today is Beverly Adam. Beverly writes Regency historical romances for Lachesis Publishing. And her books always have a good dose of humour. Her Gentlemen of Honor series follows three wonderful heroes and heroines in Ireland. Book 1 is The Spinster and The Earl, Book 2 (newly released) is The Lady and The Captain. Book 3 The Widow and The Rogue will be out soon.

Here’s Beverly . . .

When I was a little girl I used to go up into my grandmother’s attic and look at old dress patterns, picturing the fabric and embellishments used to make the garments as if they were already sewn, imagining the tea gown with the handkerchief hemline being worn with a wide brimmed hat. The lady, wearing the peach colored tea gown, for that’s what I’ve decided the color of the fabric of the gown should be, is greeted by friends when stepping down from the wide porch of a clapboard New England house. A garden party is taking place on the lawn below and guests are drinking homemade lemonade and playing croquet. A young man with slicked back hair, wearing a Gatsby type linen suit with a straw bowler sees her for the first time from his canary yellow roadster.  He exits the car with a slight limp, an old injury causing him to grimace in pain from the first World War, and greets her, dialogue ensues, facial gestures and intonation are added and an intimate joke shared.

Not much has changed since my early childhood adventures up in grandma’s attic. I am still inspired by objects, pictures, and events of the past. When I set my imagination into motion I fill in what I think my five senses would see and feel when writing.  Upon looking at a picture of a Regency wedding gown online I imagine the soft silk and lace of the garment, feel the ribbons running smoothly through my fingers, the threads used to stitch it together, the chatter of the women finishing the gown, everything becomes a tactile moment, inspiring me. The body may be tightened by laces in the back, the inset stays digging into the flesh, remembering similar moments in my own life when my body was constrained or released.

My imagination is stirred by remembered emotions. It doesn’t take a lot of thinking for me to include the movements of the body as the wearer of the garment feels a stitch in her side from too much dancing, I had done that myself, or imagine the conversations taking place as someone deeply murmurs, “You look more beautiful than I could have possibly imagined . . . ” as the heroine takes off the delicate fabric, which tears a little later when the hero eagerly tries to undress her.  The story unfolds into a love scene where feeling and emotions take over, a romantic moment is played out onboard a ship deck, the ballroom or bedroom, written out as if I, the writer, were watching a movie in my mind, except more intimately, as if I were living the emotions myself, and putting it into the story to share with the reader.  Yes, inspiration for my writing comes from all types of experiences, some lived and some daydreamed, into a tale I play out in my thoughts and share with my readers, which I hope they will enjoy.

BLURB:

He’s annoyingly gorgeous, provocative, and fast becoming her best friend. But he also has a secret that makes the little hairs on her arms stand on end…

It wasn’t nicking an expensive watch or diamond bracelet that landed streetwise Jona Montiniere in the clutches of the police. It was a darn sweater. A judge decides that she has to return to her terminally ill mother, who dumped her in an orphanage more than twelve years ago. Worse, for the coming six weeks, she has to do charity work on an estranged aunt’s vineyards in France.

Yeah, right.

Jona is determined to sneak off at the first chance she gets. But then she meets Julian, her mother’s caretaker. Playful, understanding, and sinfully sexy, he’s everything she dreams of—but she’d be damned if she let him know.

So when the first week in her new home is over, Jona is asking herself two things. One, how could it happen that she ended up in Julian’s arms after only three days? And two, how the hell did he awaken her mother from the dead…?

READERS LOVE SUMMER OF MY SECRET ANGEL:

OH. MY. GOSH! this book, I just…I’m at loss for words. I’ve never been so captivated by a book in my life. I read every word slowly making sure I didn’t miss a single detail. I absolutely adore this book. It was so moving, it brought me to such intense tears. The life jona faced, not having all the answers that she deserved to know, to have heartbreak more than once and finally allowed herself to feel; words cannot describe this book. Such a wonderful story. Beautifully written. Beautifully told. Every character is captivating and demands your attention. It leaves you on the edge of your seat, waiting for Jona’s much deserved happy ending. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. I swear you won’t put it down once you’ve started!!

ANGELIC, BUT WITH AN EARTHY TWIST! Jona is a girl who has a world of hurt. She uses her smart tongue to hide her true emotions. Both her tongue and actions get her into a ton of trouble which in the end forces her to deal with something she never wanted anything to do with – her mother. The twist comes with her mother’s “helper” Julian who softens her in a way that she never wanted. The author does a wonderful job of bringing a certain ‘realness’ to the character Jona in all her harsh glory. Julian is what you would expect and then some (don’t want to create spoilers). The love in the novel is both heavenly and earthly all at once! You should read this book. I actually found it quite touching and would read it again. There is some cussing at the start of the novel but that gradually peters out as she undergoes some level of change.

I like this novel so much that I can actually see it as a movie. With the right actors it would be most excellent.

WOW! AMAZING! LOVED IT!!! I didn’t quite know what to expect when I first got this book, but once I started reading it I could NOT put it down. Towards the end though this book definitely yanked more than a few tears from me, which is pretty hard to do. I got this book in the evening and fell asleep reading because I just couldn’t stop reading.

AMAZING! I absolutely love this book. The author made everything seem so real to me. I cried at currant parts and laughed at other. I didn’t want this book to end.

I LOVED IT! Such a lovely story. I could not stop reading. I loved Jona and her sarcastic/snarky personality. I adored Julian and his undying angelic love. Beautiful story full of love, hope, sadness, and just the right amount of sexiness.

ADDICTING! I got this book today and I just finished it! it’s so beautiful it even made me cry. I love this book and I bet you will too.

AUTHOR BIO:

The quick-and-dirty:

I’m a girl with a passion for writing.

The genres you’ll find me hanging out at are contemporary and paranormal YA, but I’m also snooping into some adult paranormal right now. All of them romances…of course.

The nitty-gritty:

I’m an Austrian lass—totally uncomplicated and up to anything fun.

I grew up in Vienna, not by free will but because my parents decided to move there when I was only 4 years old. I. Hated. The. City. Everything about it. So right after graduation I moved back to Upper Austria, where I settled down with a nice husband and an awesome laptop.

I’ve been a storyteller all my life. Already in kindergarten, I came up with the most exotic fantasies and tales. My teacher would call me a liar. I call it the cornerstone of my writing career.

People always told me you can’t make a living with being an author. So when my first novella PLAY WITH ME came out and shot straight to the stars within the first week, I was totally dumbstruck. Took me a while to realize what was happening, LOL.

And the personal stuff:

At the (awesome) age of seventeen, I met the love of my life. But he was a playboy, and I was so not going to be his next trophy. It took him another four years of fighting for me until I finally decided to give that “couple-thing” with him a shot. I’m now married to this man. 😉

We have an eleven-year-old son, and together we travel a lot…although I sometimes wish the trips were shorter because I can’t wait to get back to my laptop and my many stories. Unless we’re in Disneyland. No stress to go home then…

If you still want to know more about me, my FAQ page is the right address for you. 😉

REVIEWS:
5 Stars! Really enjoyable…found it hard to put down. I would recommend to people who enjoy a romantic story, and great ending. Barbara Jolly http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/A1HFAV1BH7C3BG/ref=cm_cr_pr_pdp

I have looked forward to the release of this book since I finished book 2. The wait was worth it. We are reintroduced to Sara who we met in book 1. She was hard to like in the first book but after learning her story I have fallen in love with her character as I have all Christina Tetreault’s characters. This author skillfully develops her stories and characters and you end up being swept away by her stories. Well worth your time to read this book. SYNOPSIS:

Katie McCullough doesn’t know it, but Max Sawyer, the over confident, irritatingly handsome hotel developer who outbid her for the lighthouse property, is none other, than her mystery lighthouse sailor. The one man who captured her heart five years earlier, the one man who has since been the plumb line for every other unsuspecting male who has crossed her path. Unfortunately for Max, he doesn’t measure up either.

Still reeling from losing the property she’d planned to call home, sparks fly when Katie assumes Max is turning her beloved lighthouse compound into one of his ‘Serenity Spa Resorts.” Outraged, Katie sets out on a mission to dismantle the property…and his plans.

Except Max’s plans have absolutely nothing to do with hotels and everything to do with winning Katie’s heart.

REVIEWS:

“Keeper Of My Heart DID NOT DISAPPOINT. Katie and Max have a tangible chemistry throughout the story that was both entertaining, humorous, and competitive. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good romance that isn’t typical or inappropriate.” Kara Grant

“Ms. Flynn’s gift with the pen in describing the charm of the beautiful sea-side lighthouse and it’s properties makes one yearn for the salt-scented peace and warm community it invokes.” TJ

“You will love this book!! It was that good. The storyline was refreshing…If you are looking for a hot passionate romance book, you won’t find it in this but what you will find is a sweet romantic story of two people finding their way to one another… You will be delighted in the bantering between Katie and Max, you may even find yourself chuckling out loud a time or two.” Kat – Forever Book Lover

“Max was adorable to me. He was so thoughtful, even though Katie didn’t see him that way. I LOVE that he came back for her!” Autumn Review’s

“I thoroughly enjoyed this book because it was light and fun. Darcy Flynn did an amazing job describing her scenes…I couldn’t put it down. I loved the romance between Max and Katie with kisses and simple affection, rather than the reliance upon more carnal scenes found in most romance novels.” Heather Boustead

“Excellent story. I just couldn’t put it down.” Emma Leigh

“Loved.It.To.PIECES!!” Jen H.
