ABOUT THE STORY:

Last month Kate Garrett was a Police Detective. Now she’s a Pet P.I.?

Kate recently inherited half her father’s private investigation company and a partner who is as irritating as he is attractive. Kate has been avoiding Jake Carmedy for years, but now her life might depend on him.

Kate and Jake are on the hunt for a serial cat killer who has mysterious connections to her father’s last police case. Kate’s father had been forced to retire when he was shot investigating a domestic disturbance. Is the shooter back for revenge? And is Kate or Jake next?

READ AN EXCERPT:

December 16

Violent death was never pleasant. The cold hadn’t diminished the smell of blood, piss and stool—or if it had, I didn’t want to think about it.

A dart, the kind animal control officers use in their rifles, was sticking into the ribs. Instead of delivering a tranquillizer, its payload was poison. The feathery stabilizer at the end was red and green. Very seasonal.

“Do we know what the poison is, Chief?”

“Looks like cyanide. Samples were taken from the last victim. I’ll let you know when the latest batch have been processed and compared.”

Igor Thorsen, Chief of Detectives and my godfather, bent down and offered me his hand. I let him pull me out of the crouch I had been sustaining for several minutes while I examined the body. I didn’t need the help, but it was a warm gesture on a cold night.

“I could use your help on this, Kathleen. People are getting nervous but I can hardly free up a detective for a serial cat-killer. I can authorize support services for a week and the East Hills Neighbourhood Group will pay your fees.”

I stripped off my gloves and ran my fingers through my hair, pushing back the auburn strands that had blown into my face. Time for a cut. Or maybe not. I didn’t have to keep up the uniform code for keeping hair short or worn up.

I looked up at the Chief. Way up. And I’m not short. Or particularly tall.

I nodded.

My name is Kate Garrett. Up until recently, I had been a rookie detective in the violent crimes unit. The chief was my boss. Almost one month ago my father, the Joe Garrett of Garrett Investigations, was killed in a pedestrian-vehicle incident. Now I was the Garrett of Carmedy and Garrett Investigations.

Last month I was a homicide detective. Now I was a pet P.I.?

ABOUT THE STORY:
In 2018, rookie detective, Kate Garrett lives in the shadow of her near-legendary father Joe. When Joe dies unexpectedly, he leaves Kate half interest in Garrett Investigations, his last case that ties to three murders, a partner she can’t stand, and a legacy to live up to.

Jake Carmedy has lost a partner, mentor and friend, but grief will come later. First, he has a case to solve, one that has detoured from a simple insurance case to a murder investigation. If that isn’t enough, Joe’s daughter seems to want to take her father’s place as his boss.

Each one is working on a different part of the puzzle. No matter how hard they try, Carmedy and Garrett can’t avoid each other…and they might be next on a killer’s list.

SNEAK PEEK:

Mercy waited by Kate’s desk. Except for a little mud spattered on her boots, her black hair, lace t-shirt and leather pants were immaculate. The effect was only slightly spoiled by the fact Mercy looked nervous.

“Thorsen wants to see you,” she said quietly.

“What did I do this time?”

Mercy pursed her lips and nodded toward the docking port. “Take everything. I’ll generate the reports. I’ll be around if you want to talk.”

Brow furrowed, Kate disengaged her eCom from the port and picked up her mug. It was probably not a good idea to walk in to see the Chief of Detectives with a cup of coffee in hand, but the brew had just reached the perfect temperature for drinking. She compromised by taking an extra minute to gulp down half the cup, then poured the remainder in the sink. Wiping a dribble of coffee off her chin she paused outside the only enclosed office in the suite, took a deep breath, and then knocked.

The chief opened the door and ushered Kate in. This didn’t bode well. His usual response was bellowing, “Come in.”

Usually, Kate felt like a shrimp in the presence of her boss. She’d made the minimum height requirement to join the police force and there was nothing wispy or fragile about her. But Chief Igor Thorsen was a giant of a man, a Viking warrior with long red-blonde hair, a full beard and the hint of a Nordic accent. Most would say Igor Thorsen was a behemoth. ‘Large as life and twice as ugly,’ her father joked. Except right now, he seemed deflated.

“What’s wrong, Chief?”

“Kathleen…it’s your father.”

And then Kate knew. The knowledge closed in on her, shutting down her ability to react, to speak, to take a breath. It wasn’t just the Chief who had shrunk. The whole world had suddenly grown smaller.

Kate Garrett works as a police detective in a city in southwestern Ontario. She’s in the midst of a drug-related homicide investigation when she gets the worst news possible: her father Joe has been hit by a car and killed. A retired police officer himself, Joe had since turned to running his own private investigation service. Was it his most recent case that put him in harm’s way? Alison Bruce has concocted a complex and very interesting plot and delivered it in a fast-paced story with well-developed and realistic characterization. I look forward to the next installment in this series.

Bruce writes a novel, which grips your attention from the first page. There is romance, grief and a complex plot. It has grim crime scenes, the unexpected beauty found in the dark corners of a city, vividly realistic characters and an irreverent sense of humour. In other words, it’s a treat for the senses.

This is a great read. Alison Bruce’s Kate Garrett is a wonderful, complex, intelligent and realistic character. Then Bruce surrounds Kate with other quirky personalities. As a result, the reader is along for the hunt while Kate tracks a poisonous predator. ~ Garry Ryan, author of Malabarista.

SNEAK PEEK:

It was no longer raining. It made no difference. Detective Kate Garrett was already soaked and mud oozed over her shoes as she picked through the bushes in the overgrown industrial lot, looking for evidence of illegal drugs.

“Ah, the romantic life of a police detective,” Kate said, echoing one of her father’s favourite sayings. A wet branch slapped her in the face and reminded her that a girl’s life hung on the work she was doing.

Meanwhile, the instigators of this search were wrapped in blankets, each waiting in the back of separate squad cars. She hoped they were in their own private hells, worrying about what was going to happen next. Perhaps the prospect of imprisonment chilled them as much as the grey November afternoon chilled her.

She doubted it. They were probably pissed off they’d been caught.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT:

Prudence Hartley has the usual single mom problems: getting her kids to school on time; juggling a gazillion errands while trying to get a full day’s work done; oh, and don’t forget about dinner.

But Pru’s problems become a tad more complicated and a lot more dangerous when she finds a dead man in her house. Or a dead spy to be exact. Suddenly, a federal agent named David Merrick shows up and whisks her and her kids into protective custody. Pru has so many questions spinning through her brain she doesn’t know where to begin. How is she going to keep her kids safe? What was the dead spy looking for in her house? Why are the spies after her? Oh, and there’s one more question . . . just a pesky, minor thing. Why does Merrick have to be so damn sexy and protective?

EXCERPT:

Maybe he was just doing his job, but Sergeant Merrick was my hero. He coordinated the paramedics, police, ambulance attendants, and an intrepid reporter who came running when three ambulances, an EMT truck from the fire department and half a dozen police cruisers congregated at the hotel. More importantly, at least to me, he calmed Hope and Boone, assuring them that their mother was fine, even if she was sitting with her head between her knees, holding a bloody towel. He got them clear of the chaos and made sure they got safely to their father’s with a police escort.

“I’ll have a uniformed officer stay with them overnight.” he assured.

Once they were away, Merrick signalled the next set of ambulance attendants to help me onto a stretcher.

“We meet again.”

I focussed on the speaker. It took me a moment, but I connected the dots. He checked on us the night before.

“Bob,” he said, in case I forgot.

I nodded. “I remember.”

“It looks like you were wrong,” he said as he helped me onto the stretcher. “Bullet wounds are catching.”

Flashing his badge, Merrick managed to get to us shortly after we arrived at the hospital. He made sure Zeke and I were kept together and stayed with us, even after repeatedly being told by the attending nurses to leave. Then, when we were alone, Merrick asked the big question. “What happened?”

I knew what he was really asking.

“Why didn’t I hide in the bathroom with Hope and Boone? You think I didn’t lock the door properly, but I put the security bar on and everything. I called you as soon as I could. What took you so long?”

I took a dive off the edge of rationality into the deep end of guilt and second-guessing. I burst into tears. I hate it when that happens.

“Give her a break, Sarge,” said Zeke, raising himself up on his good elbow. “She saved my life.”

Merrick, who had taken my outburst calmly, raised an eyebrow.

“Well,” Zeke temporised, “she intended to save my life. She couldn’t know that I had moved out of the line of fire.” He tried to sit up. “I know, I never should have been in his line of fire in the first place . . . probably should stick to the backroom stuff . . .”

In the midst of my sobbing and Zeke’s self-flagellation, Merrick told us to calm down.

Big mistake. That might have worked on Zeke. Don’t know. Wasn’t paying attention. For me, it was like waving a red cape in front of a bull. All my fear and guilt transformed into anger directed at him. I grabbed him by the shirt-front and pulled myself up with the strength that comes with hysteria.

“I’m not a cop. I’m a mother,” I shouted, hopping bare footed onto the cold floor. “I didn’t hide with my children because I figured that whoever it was, they were looking for me. If they found me, they wouldn’t go looking for my kids too. I didn’t know if you’d get there in time to stop Hope and Boone from becoming hostages and I wasn’t going to risk it. I wasn’t going to risk Zeke dying either and I would have done the same for you.”

I spoke in a rush, losing volume and air as I went, losing momentum as I realized the attention I was drawing. Not one of my shining moments.

I started to collapse. I tried to steady myself using my handhold on Merrick’s shirt. He grabbed my shoulders to brace me. He didn’t lose his cool for an instant.

“Call a nurse,” he told Zeke. “She’s bleeding.”

I gave a choke of laughter. There were at least two nurses, an orderly, and three men in uniform ranged behind Merrick.

My vision got blurry. I blinked to clear it, refocused, and noticed that Merrick was wearing red and green plaid pyjamas. I let go of his top and smoothed out the soft material.

“Flannel,” I said, and passed out.

STELLAR REVIEWS:

A rollicking adventure of romance and True Grit… This is an historical Western romance in a style that reminds me of Hemingway. Although the descriptions are colorful and accurate, there are no wasted words here as the characters are developed through dialogue and action. The old West comes to life! Highly recommended. Goodreads

Good old-fashioned historic western romance with a kick!
Alison Bruce does an excellent job on setting the scenes and customs of the old west. History, characterizations, and the long ride of the heroes of the story are convincing for the time. There is lots of action and gun-play as they work together on a case in Fortuna. … If you’re looking for a dish of the old west with a dash of romance and humor minus the raunch dressing, this book is for you. Goodreads

“Alison Bruce captures the Old West in a delightful, if improbable, mix of romance, cultures and characters with UNDER A TEXAS STAR” Goodreads – Areletta Dawdy (4 stars)

“I cannot describe to yall how much I loved this book.” Heather (5 stars)

“An endearing story of betrayal and love . . . ” Amazon UK T. Tibbenham
