ABOUT THE STORY:

Last month Kate Garrett was a Police Detective. Now she’s a Pet P.I.?

Kate recently inherited half her father’s private investigation company and a partner who is as irritating as he is attractive. Kate has been avoiding Jake Carmedy for years, but now her life might depend on him.

Kate and Jake are on the hunt for a serial cat killer who has mysterious connections to her father’s last police case. Kate’s father had been forced to retire when he was shot investigating a domestic disturbance. Is the shooter back for revenge? And is Kate or Jake next?

READ AN EXCERPT:

December 16

Violent death was never pleasant. The cold hadn’t diminished the smell of blood, piss and stool—or if it had, I didn’t want to think about it.

A dart, the kind animal control officers use in their rifles, was sticking into the ribs. Instead of delivering a tranquillizer, its payload was poison. The feathery stabilizer at the end was red and green. Very seasonal.

“Do we know what the poison is, Chief?”

“Looks like cyanide. Samples were taken from the last victim. I’ll let you know when the latest batch have been processed and compared.”

Igor Thorsen, Chief of Detectives and my godfather, bent down and offered me his hand. I let him pull me out of the crouch I had been sustaining for several minutes while I examined the body. I didn’t need the help, but it was a warm gesture on a cold night.

“I could use your help on this, Kathleen. People are getting nervous but I can hardly free up a detective for a serial cat-killer. I can authorize support services for a week and the East Hills Neighbourhood Group will pay your fees.”

I stripped off my gloves and ran my fingers through my hair, pushing back the auburn strands that had blown into my face. Time for a cut. Or maybe not. I didn’t have to keep up the uniform code for keeping hair short or worn up.

I looked up at the Chief. Way up. And I’m not short. Or particularly tall.

I nodded.

My name is Kate Garrett. Up until recently, I had been a rookie detective in the violent crimes unit. The chief was my boss. Almost one month ago my father, the Joe Garrett of Garrett Investigations, was killed in a pedestrian-vehicle incident. Now I was the Garrett of Carmedy and Garrett Investigations.

Last month I was a homicide detective. Now I was a pet P.I.?

STELLAR REVIEWS:
“A deliciously vibrant portrait that realistically muddles good and evil.” —Kirkus Reviews

“Astolfo’s wonderful first sentence in Sweet Karoline explodes on the page and resonates right to the end of this twisting examination of dangerous minds. Never have I encountered a narrative voice that alternates more deftly between alienating and enticing.” —Mel Bradshaw, author of Fire On The Runway
“A deliciously twisted story about the perplexing power of adult female relationships. By turns scathingly funny and darkly insightful, Sweet Karoline is a hedonistic journey with all the right ingredients: lust, betrayal, true love and mystery. Grab a glass of wine and have the bottle handy. A compelling read from the start through to the surprising end.” —Robin Spano, author of Death’s Last Run

“In Catherine Astolfo’s chilling new novel Sweet Karoline, things aren’t always as they seem. Anne, the multifaceted anti-heroine in this noir tale takes a fateful journey into her forgotten past, uncovering the painful roots of her childhood. While furrowing for answers, a mystery unfolds, truths swirl to the surface, a heinous murder occurs. Who’s the killer? Caught in a tangled web of greed, lies and deceit Anne must come to terms with her past, present and future, and the bleak realization that those we hold close may be the last ones to trust. Compelling, visually descriptive, deftly delivered…Catherine Astolfo’s got the goods!” —Douglas Wickard, author of A Perfect Husband

“Sweet Karoline is a multi-layered mystery, where nothing is as it seems. The story grips you on page one and leads you through a maze of history, twisted relationships, and ultimately the darkness of the human mind.” —Liz Bugg, author of Oranges and Lemons
“In Sweet Karoline, Astolfo has created a daring hybrid mystery that combines elements of romance, history, and suspense in a carefully crafted story that keeps you guessing to the very end. Astolfo explores new boundaries as she extends her reach beyond the cozy mystery in this psychological exploration of the mind of a killer. A unique exploration of guilt and revenge.” —Michael J. McCann, author of The Fregoli Delusion

“The clever plot twists in Sweet Karoline will enrapture you from page one through the last paragraphs of this fast-paced modern mystery. Author Catherine Astolfo exhibits a strikingly perceptive gift for believable dialogue and rich character development. Her dry wit and colorful descriptions will have you howling in laughter at points, but in tears at others as she digs deep into the themes of guilt, race, and relationships. The powers of love and redemption are strong, but does the heart of an Ice Queen ever really melt? Enjoy the romp from Los Angeles, through Canada, to a priceless Italian rendezvous—all in the pages of Sweet Karoline, where long-buried secrets lie.” —Lisa Pell, award-winning author of Who’s Your Daddy, Baby?

ABOUT THE STORY:
In 2018, rookie detective, Kate Garrett lives in the shadow of her near-legendary father Joe. When Joe dies unexpectedly, he leaves Kate half interest in Garrett Investigations, his last case that ties to three murders, a partner she can’t stand, and a legacy to live up to.

Jake Carmedy has lost a partner, mentor and friend, but grief will come later. First, he has a case to solve, one that has detoured from a simple insurance case to a murder investigation. If that isn’t enough, Joe’s daughter seems to want to take her father’s place as his boss.

Each one is working on a different part of the puzzle. No matter how hard they try, Carmedy and Garrett can’t avoid each other…and they might be next on a killer’s list.

SNEAK PEEK:

Mercy waited by Kate’s desk. Except for a little mud spattered on her boots, her black hair, lace t-shirt and leather pants were immaculate. The effect was only slightly spoiled by the fact Mercy looked nervous.

“Thorsen wants to see you,” she said quietly.

“What did I do this time?”

Mercy pursed her lips and nodded toward the docking port. “Take everything. I’ll generate the reports. I’ll be around if you want to talk.”

Brow furrowed, Kate disengaged her eCom from the port and picked up her mug. It was probably not a good idea to walk in to see the Chief of Detectives with a cup of coffee in hand, but the brew had just reached the perfect temperature for drinking. She compromised by taking an extra minute to gulp down half the cup, then poured the remainder in the sink. Wiping a dribble of coffee off her chin she paused outside the only enclosed office in the suite, took a deep breath, and then knocked.

The chief opened the door and ushered Kate in. This didn’t bode well. His usual response was bellowing, “Come in.”

Usually, Kate felt like a shrimp in the presence of her boss. She’d made the minimum height requirement to join the police force and there was nothing wispy or fragile about her. But Chief Igor Thorsen was a giant of a man, a Viking warrior with long red-blonde hair, a full beard and the hint of a Nordic accent. Most would say Igor Thorsen was a behemoth. ‘Large as life and twice as ugly,’ her father joked. Except right now, he seemed deflated.

“What’s wrong, Chief?”

“Kathleen…it’s your father.”

And then Kate knew. The knowledge closed in on her, shutting down her ability to react, to speak, to take a breath. It wasn’t just the Chief who had shrunk. The whole world had suddenly grown smaller.

Alison Bruce has concocted a complex and very interesting plot and delivered it in a fast-paced story with well-developed and realistic characterization. I look forward to the next installment in this series.

Bruce writes a novel, which grips your attention from the first page. There is romance, grief and a complex plot. It has grim crime scenes, the unexpected beauty found in the dark corners of a city, vividly realistic characters and an irreverent sense of humour. In other words, it’s a treat for the senses.

This is a great read. Alison Bruce’s Kate Garrett is a wonderful, complex, intelligent and realistic character. Then Bruce surrounds Kate with other quirky personalities. As a result, the reader is along for the hunt while Kate tracks a poisonous predator. ~ Garry Ryan, author of Malabarista.

SNEAK PEEK:

It was no longer raining. It made no difference. Detective Kate Garrett was already soaked and mud oozed over her shoes as she picked through the bushes in the overgrown industrial lot, looking for evidence of illegal drugs.

“Ah, the romantic life of a police detective,” Kate said, echoing one of her father’s favourite sayings. A wet branch slapped her in the face and reminded her that a girl’s life hung on the work she was doing.

Meanwhile, the instigators of this search were wrapped in blankets, each waiting in the back of separate squad cars. She hoped they were in their own private hells, worrying about what was going to happen next. Perhaps the prospect of imprisonment chilled them as much as the grey November afternoon chilled her.

She doubted it. They were probably pissed off they’d been caught.

What it’s About:

Carrie and Tom join together again to track a serial killer bent on eliminating selected petite blondes. A serial killer that is filled with anger, remorse and pain. Pain that is methodically inflicted on those chosen. Death that comes in a take-out cup of deliciously brewed latte. A killer dubbed Latte Lover by detectives desperately trying to unravel the identity of this bitterly focused person. The clues are meager—a cup of latte, a missing lock of hair, and an unidentifiable poison. What is the link between the murdered women? Carrie and Tom fight against a time-table known only to the killer.

Homicide detective, Tom Watts, isn’t beyond exploiting Carrie’s particular talent as he lures her back into helping him, needing her gift of perceiving what isn’t there, feeling what others refuse to see or acknowledge, and his desire to have her back into his life. He senses Carrie is ready to do combat again after her last brush with a serial killer dubbed The Jock. A harrowing brush with death that left her healing in a hospital bed. Carrie stops fighting Tom’s request and joins this man who holds a piece of her heart. What will stop the Latte Lover from deciding that although neither Tom nor Carrie meets the criteria, they could be the next victims?

AUTHOR BIO

I live in Colorado with my husband and my two Yorkie kid dogs: Stormy, four pounds, and Eli, six pounds. I’m a native of Colorado, but I’ve lived several years in Wyoming and Montana. My historical romances are: Montana Star, Sapphire Blue, Unconquerable Callie, and Wyoming Heather. Tears In The Wind is a contemporary romance. Then I changed genres from my beloved romances and wrote, under the pen name of D. M. Woods, my first suspense/thriller: Death Crosses The Finish Line. The second book in this ‘death’ series, Death Is A Habit, came out January 8th, this year. I am currently working on the third book of this series, Death Walks C Dock. Truly, I mean it when I say my greatest pleasure next to writing is having my books read and enjoyed. There are many more stories just waiting to be written.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT:

Seventh Fire is the fourth and final installment of the Emily Taylor Mysteries. Emily and her husband, Langford, travel back both in place and time to the site of their dark and mysterious past, a past that led to jail and months in a hospital bed. Along the journey to prove Langford’s innocence, they uncover an appalling secret that threatens their lives once more, and this time, the attack may be fatal.

STELLAR REVIEWS:

“The evocative setting of 1980’s Vancouver is beautifully described in Astolfo’s latest Emily Taylor mystery “Seventh Fire.” The horror of murder intertwines with the passion of art in an intriguing plot that the reader unravels only at the end. Emily Taylor fans will be astounded at the dark secrets that lurk in her past.” —Janet Kellough, author of On the Head of a Pin

“Seventh Fire is a chilling tale with unimaginable evil at its core. Astolfo slowly but steadily builds suspense while introducing a handful of plausible villains that keep the reader guessing until the very end. The story is a chilling, cautionary tale at odds with the beautiful setting of Vancouver, which Astolfo paints with a deft hand.” —Brenda Chapman, author of In Winter’s Grip

“Thirty years ago a horrific murder shocked the city of Vancouver. The killer was quickly caught, tried, and incarcerated. But they had the wrong man, and Emily Taylor has devoted her life to seeing her husband exonerated. Seventh Fire is a powerful tale of love verses hate and the ability of that love to triumph over evil.” — Vicki Delany, author of Among the Departed

As fear rips through the traumatized town, Emily’s investigation inadvertently leads the police to her door, and to her husband Langford, who is hiding a secret of his own.
