ABOUT CHRIS KARLSEN:

I was born and raised in Chicago. My father was a history professor and my mother was, and is, a voracious reader. I grew up with a love of history and books.

My parents also love traveling, a passion they passed onto me. I wanted to see the places I read about, see the land and monuments from the time periods that fascinated me. I’ve had the good fortune to travel extensively throughout Europe, the Near East, and North Africa.

I am a retired police detective. I spent twenty-five years in law enforcement with two different agencies. My desire to write came in my early teens. After I retired, I decided to pursue that dream.

I currently live in the Pacific Northwest with my husband, four rescue dogs and a rescue horse.

Racing against the impending destruction of Pompeii, she must not only decipher the mystery of her time-shift, but the mystery of love as well.

REVIEWS:

“What fabulous reading! Ms. Barnett has given us an enchanting story with an ageless plot. She has also combined genres with exquisite results. Ms. Barnett has an imagination I envy. I thoroughly enjoy her characters and creative use of historical settings. I, personally, want that scrumptious man she introduced. In lieu of that unfortunate impossibility, I will settle for a copy of this one-in-a-million book that I can read again and again. Get one for yourself. You, too, will look like the cat that swallowed the canary when you have read it.” 5 Cups – Coffee Time Romance

“Through the Mists of Time by author Teri Barnett is an insightful and sensual indulgence for readers of historical romance. It is a story of a transcendent love and the development of character. The reader is pulled into the story through the detailed sketching of the heroine’s evolvement from an immature schoolgirl to a compassionate woman. If you are a fan of time travel romance then make it a point to read Teri Barnett’s Through the Mists of Time. You won’t regret it.” 4 Roses – A Romance Review

AUTHOR BIO:

Growing up in the ’70’s, I read every romance novel I could find, vowing one day to write my own. It took me until the 90’s to start writing seriously, but in the span of about ten years, I crafted four novels, a novella, and many short stories. The first novel I wrote, Hunter Moon, will never be seen. But first novels tend to be that way.

SYNOPSIS:

As the cleansing fires of Beltain burned and the villagers danced, Maere cu Llwyr witnessed the garrote murder of her parents at the hands of her father’s brother. Born with the triple signs of the goddess, legend tells that whoever shares Maere’s bed first will also share her healing power – and her uncle, Eugis, has vowed it will be he. With her mother and father out of his way, he hides Maere in a convent with plans to retrieve – and bed her – on her eighteenth birthday.

Maere carries no memory of the horrific events of that Beltain night. All she knows of her childhood is contained in remnants of dreams and a growing ability to heal through touch. Fearing she’ll be punished for this power, she hides herself away from the scrutiny of the nuns, determined to discover the secrets of her past so she might better understand the present and where her future lies.

Dylan mac Connall, betrothed of the girl Maere, never forgot that bloody night when he saw his own father murdered as well. Having escaped capture by Eugis’ men, he grows to adulthood under the tutelage of an old woman who helps him discover his own magic. But the magic does not appease his soul and he becomes consumed with hatred and plots of revenge against Eugis, becoming determined it will be he who takes Maere first.

But when Dylan enters the abbey and discovers the woman Maere has become, he finds himself taking on the role of protector when Eugis – aided by the goddess Morrigu and the Viking forces surrounding their lands – makes good on his promise and returns for Maere, setting off a series of events which can only be resolved with one of their deaths.

SYNOPSIS:
What if you discovered that your soul mate lived three centuries before you were even born? It’s been years since Madeline and her mama were victims of a car crash. Madeline survived but suffers wicked anxiety. Her mama simply disappeared. At age sixteen she inherits her mama’s handmade book filled with dangerous family secrets, but barely skimmed it before she’s pushed onto train tracks.

Madeline wakes in 1675, the sole survivor of a Native massacre on a colonial settlement. She has inadvertently time traveled to the War between the Wampanoag Natives and the colonists they recently welcomed to America’s shores. Rescued and taken back to a colonial garrison, Madeline learns she is a Messenger, a traveler who can slip through time’s fabric at will, bringing messages that could change one life or many. But she doesn’t know the first thing about traveling let alone surviving this harsh new world. Rumors of witchcraft and spying could get her killed. And falling into a forbidden love with Samuel, a mixed blood boy, puts them both at risk.

The only way Madeline can get home and save both their lives is to train with Samuel and the Medicine Woman, confront her deepest fears and fulfill her destiny as a Messenger. But the Hunters, dark-souled predators as well as skilled time travelers, are closing in—and they will kill her if she doesn’t join them. Madeline learns that falling in love, and falling through time doesn’t have to be accidental, could be deadly, but is worth the fight of her life.

SNEAK PEEK:

I stopped for a few seconds to catch my breath. The droning had grown louder. Good. I was closer to that place where desire, action, a little bit of luck and magic would join forces. I’d find that moment to slip through time’s fabric, travel hundreds of years back to present day and warn or even save people. Especially my Samuel.

Then I heard his voice, muffled, but close by. And his words chilled my soul. “Stop running, Messenger,” he said. “You cannot save him or yourself. You cannot save anybody.”

AUTHOR BIO:

In grade school Pamela DuMond was an A student but stuttered and was badly bullied. Reading became her refuge. She devoured every thriller and mystery she could get her hands on and eventually wrote her own.

Pamela discovered Erin Brockovich’s life story, pitched and sold it to a production company and studio. Erin Brockovich the movie was nominated for four Academy Awards. Julia Roberts won an Oscar for portraying Erin.

Thriller novels like The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Divergent by Veronica Roth, and epic romantic movies like Last of the Mohicans and Titanic inspired her to write The Messenger’s Handbook, the first book in a planned trilogy.

Pamela’s other books are bestselling comedic mysteries. Krill Press published Cupcakes, Lies, and Dead Guys in 2010. Cupcakes, Sales, and Cocktails – A Novella was published in 2011. Cupcakes, Pies, and Hot Guys will be released summer 2012.

Pamela is a writer, chiropractor, cranio-sacral therapist. Besides reading, writing, she loves the beach, yoga, movies, animals, her family and friends. She lives in Venice Beach, California with her furballs.

REVIEWS:

Book review from Melissa Bradley @ Melissa’s Imaginarium

“This book is savagely beautiful. Julia Phillips Smith puts the monster back into vampire.  She weaves a spell over her readers with her subtly brilliant dialogue and lush descriptions. I could smell the forest, hear the crackle of the fires and oh my God can she write fight scenes in all their bloody, violent glory.”

http://melissasimaginarium.blogspot.com/2011/11/saint-sanguinus-by-julia-phillips-smith.html

Book review from Travis Cody @ Trav’s Thoughts

“Her vampires are dark and ravenous; monsters more in the tradition of the vampire as deadly, dangerous and blood thirsty. But it’s not a horror story. It’s a dark romantic adventure with appeal to men and women. All together an outstanding debut.”

An elite brotherhood stands between humans and vampires, preventing one side from annihilating the other. Who are called to this service? Only those warriors who curse God with their dying breath.

Tanwen resists her father’s command to take a husband. The only one who understands her sorrow is Cavan, the wise woman’s son. When he promises that he can reunite her with her beloved, she agrees to his terms. But does Tanwen truly understand the depth of the price that must be paid?

SNEAK PEEK:

Peredur hung forward, his arms stretched awkwardly behind him, bound behind a large tree. Now fully awake, he tried to stand upright and surge forward, but the bonds held.
His brethren gathered all around the tree. Melnak who stood farthest away in the shadows, pulled his amulet from where it hid in his robes then lifted it over his head. As he approached, Melnak said, “God our Father, our brother now descends into the trial you have given him.”
The brethren intoned, “Our Father, hear us,” just as Peredur’s body began to jerk away from the amulet as though compelled to do so. Melnak brought the shining polished bone to rest against the bottom rib of Peredur’s left side.
For a moment Peredur couldn’t see. All before him was blinding white light.
When he came to, Peredur sensed he was somewhere else entirely, no longer bound to the tree.
In the distance, a figure waited for him, a miserable bent man barely clothed in rags. Peredur tried to join him, but at the hint of motion his legs shot through with fiery tendrils. The figure turned his face to see who approached.
Such a man. His face held the expression of one who had endured a torturous vigil, rather like the one from which Peredur could not free himself. But the face also held a beauty that hurt to see. Peredur wanted to turn his face away, but the gaze of those tormented eyes held him and despite the pain, he forced a step or two forward.
I’m coming, Peredur tried to tell him, but the bent figure lowered his head as if overcome by agony after all. Peredur grit his teeth and pushed forward with all his might.
His feet finally moved, but suddenly it seemed the saint was miles from where Peredur could reach him. Peredur’s heart sank.
He remembered in his boyhood, how heavy the sword had been at first, when the sword master made him swing it again and again. His legs just now were the same. They rebelled against his commands.
Move! he shouted at them. Move!
Anger at the injustice of it coursed through him. As the anger rose, the binding stiffness released his legs and his steps grew easier.
Peredur wanted to race to the saint’s side, but what use would there be in that? Now that he could move, he walked with dread toward the fallen bundle of rags and limbs. Kneeling there, he took the saint in his arms and brushed the matted hair from the bruised face.
Saint Cittinus’ eyes fluttered open.
Peredur looked down at the youthful saint in his arms, made old before his time by the captivity and mistreatment he’d endured. As if for the first time, Peredur saw the clear white line of a scar across the saint’s neck, as if a rope had choked him there.
Saint Cittinus looked into Peredur’s eyes. Those cracked lips moved. Instead of ‘I thirst,’ the saint spoke clearly, if softly. “We have no one else to fear,” he said, “but our Lord God. Who is in Heaven.”
Peredur nodded. He stayed as he was and watched the saint expire before his eyes. All the while his angel never took his hand from Peredur’s shoulder.
Saint Cittinus faded from Peredur’s grip, though he still felt the weight of him in his arms.  No sooner than he’d seen it, but Peredur came to.
He found himself still straining in his bonds against the tree. With breathtaking intensity, the pain in his rib returned. Melnak held the amulet to him still, with unyielding grimness.
He thought of the scar upon the saint’s neck. Instead of struggling and cursing as Peredur had done on the battlefield against the spear, Cittinus had accepted the wound that had given him the scar.
It was time to stop fighting.

SYNOPSIS:

In this both dark and hopeful first book, young Gastien Beauchamp begins his journey to Paris with two goals in life.  The first is to become an artist with his own studio, following his own rules. That is an almost impossible dream for a peasant.  Gastien has no money, no formal training, and is a naïve eighteen year old fresh off the farm. Paris spits out talented men into the gutters every day. “Good” gets you nowhere. “Great” maybe gets you a bowl of soup.

The second is to become the greatest lover in France. That should be easy. With his stunning looks, and his willingness to learn, the women of Paris are about to be awakened in a way they have only dreamt about in the 19th century!

Gastien swears that he has no interest in love.  Love would only take away his dreams.  But he is innocent and does not realize that sex without love can be quite empty.  Before he can learn that, he must face obstacles and heartaches that will threaten to destroy his very soul.

Insatiable, burning passion. Focus and drive. Raw, natural talent. Armed with those, Gastien is determined to succeed at any cost.  Poor Gastien. If he could only know in advance what struggles lay before him, he might think twice about leaving home. However, he is young and full of hope. The dreams burn relentlessly inside of him, not allowing him a moments rest. And so the journey begins…

REVIEWS:

“Wonderful, compelling read!  Challenges your own thoughts, dreams and soul!  Cannot wait for Part 2!  Thought I would miss Gastien but cannot seem to get him out of my head.”  -acelles (NOOK link above)

“I fell in love with Gastien. His story is going to captivate you.”  -Anonymous (NOOK link above)

“…catches your mind and races away with it. Drawing you further and further into Gastiens world and holding you there for hours upon hours.
When you can break away, it stays in your thoughts, until you rush back, and once again you are drawn into the world of Gastien.”
-Dayton F. Larson (Kindle link above)

” Unfamiliar with this author and not ordinarily a reader of this genre when a friend of mine loaned me this book I admit I had fairly low expectations. So after half expecting to read a bit and then get bored, instead I found myself completely drawn in to the story…The book has a contemporary feel to it in the dialogue and sexuality, but there is enough of 19th century France in there to keep you grounded in place and time. The book has some fairly graphic intense moments but they contribute to the story rather than detract from it. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to pick up a story to get lost in for a couple of days.” -W. Parker (Kindle link above)

“What do you do with artistic talent and a heart bursting with the need to express it?…Developing your art and learning the difference between love and sex makes for a powerful story. The sex is graphic, but flows with the story. You’ll be looking for more!!!

AUTHOR BIO:
Caddy Rowland grew up in the Midwest with a stack of books that almost reached the ceiling before she was five. Books, along with her vivid imagination, have always been her closest friends.

She lives in Minnesota with her husband, who was her high school sweetheart. They are owned by two parrots. Yes, they can talk, and yes, they can bite! Melanie, the African Grey has such an extensive vocabulary that Caddy sometimes thinks Melly is preparing to become an author.

After over 20 twenty years in advertising sales, Caddy decided to pursue her childhood dream of becoming an author in 2011. There are four books planned for the Gastien series, and many other books in her head. Now, if only she can learn to type 2000 words a minute…

Her goal as an author is to make readers laugh, cry, think, and become intimately connected with her main characters. To her, a good main character stays in the mind long after the story has been read. They should become as real in the mind as the person next door.

SNEAK TEASE:

Bonsoir yourself! You are quite bold sitting down without being invited! How do you know I am not meeting someone? How do you know if you are wanted?” she challenged softly, refusing to be the first to look away.

He smiled lazily and sat back. “Bold? I was bought and paid for last night when you sent me five bottles of champagne. I am definitely wanted. And, oui, you were waiting for someone. That person is now here, non?”

She nodded slightly, dropping her eyes. “Oui. He is here.”

“What is your name then?” he asked.

“Nathalie. Or Nath.”

“Well, Nathalie, I am puzzled. Tell me, do you prefer to play games? I can do that, but I prefer being open about what I am interested in. I thought last night you made your interest clear. Do we have to go through charades now?” The waiter appeared and Gastien ordered a glass of vin.

Nathalie raised her eyebrows as the waiter walked away. “Usually a gentleman buys the lady a drink.”

“You are right. They do on a date. We are not on a date. You are also assuming that I am a gentleman.”

She gave a small laugh. “My mistake.”

“I am just saying, please don’t assume things about me until you know me better. I am always open about things. However, I don’t like it when people assume they know me before they actually do.”

“Fair enough.”

“Also, anyone who can afford five bottles of champagne for a stranger can afford to buy her own drinks.”

“So, you expect me to buy the drinks?”

Non. Not mine. I am simply making my intentions clear. I am not interested in courtship, Nathalie. I don’t think you are, either.” She looked surprised. He was not as green as she expected, but every bit as delicious looking as she remembered. Perhaps they would make good bed partners more than one time. He was a challenge.

“So tell me, what are those intentions, and what is your name?” she asked.

“My name is Gastien. My intention is to come home with you so that we can enjoy ourselves in your bed.” He sipped his vin. “That is, after I have a meal. I need to satisfy that hunger first.”

“And if I have decided I am not interested?” she shot back.

“Then I want to say merci for the champagne last night, and I will move on. But, come on, Nath. Are we still playing games?”

She looked into his huge brown eyes. Those eyes were dangerous, there were too many emotions reflected in them. She would have to very careful about not losing her head over this one. But she could be careful, she told herself. She wanted to taste that mouth.  Even more, she wanted to find out what he felt like inside of her.

Gastien smiled, this time sweetly. “You are more than interested. You are already deciding what you want to do with me the first time tonight.”

“The first time? You plan on multiple times tonight?” This man was too full of himself!

Gastien nodded. He looked at her openly. “Oui. I told you I like to be honest. Here is the situation: I have not been with a woman for almost four months. Therefore, it is almost a guarantee that I won’t last long the first time. That is just the way males are. I am sorry. But, if you will let me just make myself happy that first time, I promise to make it up to you. Several times, if you wish.” He opened the menu and started to read it.

She grabbed his menu, pulling it down. “Several times tonight?”

He stared at her unblinking. “Oui. I am eighteen, Nath. I can go all night.”

“Four months without sex? With the appetite you seem to have for it? What, you weren’t in prison or something, were you?”

Gastien threw back his head and laughed. “Non, not in prison. I did nothing illegal. I am an artist, Nath. I was homeless for awhile. No one found me very appealing then.”

She thought that over for a few minutes. This man had lived on the streets during the winter. Somehow he had not only survived, he was sitting in a restaurant, in new clothes, sipping a glass of vin. Obviously, he was not without a quick mind and good instincts to go with those looks. Definitely not a one night fling like she had imagined. This man would be worth establishing a relationship with, one that benefited both of them sexually. This time she smiled even bigger, as she asked, “Several times?”

Gastien sighed. “Oui, Nath. As I said, several times. As many as you can take.”

“And if I am the one to wear you out?” she challenged again.

This time it was Gastien to raise a brow. “Seriously? Is the lady throwing down the gauntlet?”

She smiled. “I think, Gastien, that you and I are going to make each other very happy. Very happy indeed.”

Throughout the night, Gastien was her student. She started with kissing, teaching him that devouring a mouth was good in some cases, but sometimes, you needed to let a kiss start as a whisper and build steam. She taught him that kisses can happen in other places besides a mouth and a conne.

Nath showed him parts of the body that responded to touches and rubs. She taught him how to use his tongue on nipples, on ears, on the back. She taught him how to suck and bite on toes to make a woman crazy, how to run a tongue along an instep, biting the arch.

When he got to the Polidor, about six of the ten men from last night were there. So was she, at her table. The guys called him over to their table. He waved at them, but walked over to the woman’s table. Mon Dieu, she was arresting looking! Whoever wore their hair like that? He liked that she dared to do something with her hair no other woman did. He bet it would soon be in style for the masses. She looked up as he casually sat down at her table across from her. He met her eyes, gave a small indication of a smile and said “Bonsoir.”
