A gritty, suspense thriller about the underbelly of Hollywood: City of Toys by Lindy S. Hudis

City-of-toys-linds-s-kudisToday’s sneak peek is from the suspense thriller  City of Toys, by Lindy S. Hudis.

What it’s about:

Four beautiful women seek fame and fortune in Hollywood, the City of Toys, where actresses are like dolls, playing pretend on the big screen.

Marlo: a former child actress from New York City.
Rhonda: a small-town beauty queen.
Kim: a “nice Jewish girl” with a painful childhood.
Guyla: a “serious actress” with a debilitating, stress-induced illness.

Marlo, Rhonda, Kim, and Guyla, become friends living in the same apartment complex, in the city where dreams and disasters go hand-in-hand. They come to rely on each other as they deal with sexual come-ons, crazed stalkers, jealous starlets and the constant pressure of trying to make it in showbiz. But when the pressure gets too much, will their friendship save them or will the City of Toys break them?

EXCERPT:

It was well after midnight in the City of Angels. She sat on the roof of her apartment building and stared out at the enormous electric ocean. The glittering lights of Hollywood sparkled like multi-colored sequins against the black velvet sky. I can’t take it anymore, the beautiful, young woman thought, I can’t take this pain. She had just swallowed a whole bottle of Paxil and chased it down with a fifth of vodka. The girl had not planned on committing suicide, but what she had gone through in Tinseltown was enough to make anyone want to end it all.

She hated her life, hated the world and, most of all, hated herself. It certainly was not what she had envisioned; the Hollywood dreams she’d had ever since she was a little girl. The lonely, young woman from a painful childhood was desperate for inclusion in the glittering world of fame and fortune. She was desolate, regretful, and had seen the devil himself in this “City of Angels”. She also knew she was just one of thousands of lost souls who needed to be loved and adored by the whole world, just like the movie stars were. Hurting, forlorn, lost souls were everywhere in Los Angeles, and there was nothing anyone could do. It didn’t happen for her; it didn’t happen for a lot of people, and she simply didn’t want to accept that.t was well after midnight in the City of Angels. Weeping convulsively, the young woman staggered to the edge of the building and looked down. She stumbled and clutched the handrail. Feeling dizzy and hopeless, she gazed down at the luminosity that was a fantasyland. She thought about all that had happened to her, and the awful things she had done. She had done some terrible things in order to survive. She threw one leg over the railing, holding tightly with one hand. The colored lights seemed to blur into one big blob of glitter, and she thought she might retch. Goodbye, Hollywood, she cried to herself. With that, she let go of the handrail and plunged to her death onto the well-manicured lawn at the foot of the Hollywood Hills.

Lindy S. Hudis former Hollywood actress turned author talks about her writing and her life

LindyAuthorNew Q and A Round 2 with author Lindy S. Hudis. Lindy has written several books for Lachesis Publishing, including the mystery Weekends, a women’s fiction with a dose of suspense City of Toys and the erotica series Devon and Desiree which includes two installments so far: The S and M Club and The Mile High Club.

What was your favourite book as a child and why?

The_Giving_TreeThe Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.  It moved me to tears, and still does. I read it to my children, and have a copy in their library in their bedroom. Such a moving and powerful story, even for a kid’s book. He was a very creative and amazing author.

Who was your favourite teacher growing up and why?

My favorite teachers where my instructors when I was attending NYU. I studied drama at Tisch School of the Arts, and the professors were wonderful, so inspiring. They really helped free my inner artist within. I cherish my NYU days, they were really an amazing time in my life. NYU was a culture shock for a girl from Germantown, Tennessee, but I loved NYC and NYU!

WEEKENDS COVER 2When did you know you wanted to be a writer? Why?

I have always had fantasies about writing. I used to make up characters, write little plays and act them out for my family. I just wrote short stories and ghost stories for fun. Then when I became pregnant with my daughter, and had lots of spare time on my hands, I just started writing, and writing, then all of a sudden I had a completed manuscript on my hands. That manuscript evolved into my first romance/suspense novel, Weekends.

Who in the writing/publishing world do you admire and why?

I admire the small publishers, like Lachesis Publishing. They are willing to take a chance on a new author with a fresh voice. I know that it is a business, but at the same time, agents and large houses should not be so afraid to take a chance on an unknown author. There are so many fresh stories out there just waiting to be told, with fresh passion and vision. If a publisher can look beyond the money issue and see this, then they have my respect.

Tell us about your daily writing routine – what do you typically do every day?

Wake up, take kids to school, go to gym then do some writing. I have just completed the third installment of my erotic short story series called Backstage Pass about an ’80s rocker groupie. I do have to write my erotica when the kids are at school, so I can have my privacy. I don’t want them to burst into the room to see what Mommy is writing!

What is your favourite snack or guilty pleasure food that you (may or many not 😉 indulge in when writing?

I’m a bit of a health nut, so raw carrots, celery and fresh fruits and vegetables for me. Sometimes I  sneak and have some of my kid’s goldfish crackers, but not too often. I also have my liter of water beside me, too.

Mile-High-Club-1400x2100-500x724What does “writing voice” mean to you? Describe your own writing voice.

My writing voice is the path that my characters take me. My work is very character driven, I guess that comes from my acting background. I get very attached to my characters, and I let them lead me on the journey. Sometimes I feel such a deep connection with my characters that they actually seem like friends, people I care deeply for. If I start talking to them, then everybody will think I’m crazy!

What do you want to accomplish in the next five years in your writing career?

To keep on writing, keep on attracting new readers, and to give any advice to new and aspiring writers. I just want to keep on doing what I am doing, and if readers enjoy my creative artistic expression and my stories, all the better.

All of Lindy’s books are 50% off for the month of September in celebration of Lachesis Publishing’s 9th Anniversary!

What inspires your writing? By Lindy S. Hudis (mystery and suspence author)

Our guest blog today is by Lachesis Publishing author Lindy S. Hudis. Lindy has several titles with us, including the mystery Weekends, a women’s fiction with a dose of suspense City of Toys, and the erotica series Devon and Desiree which includes two installments so far: The S and M Club and The Mile High Club.

Our ongoing topic is: What inspires your writing? Welcome Lindy . . .

LindyAuthorNewI have always been a writer, even before I knew what writing even was. As a child, I used to make up stories in my head, almost like being in a movie. I was a pretty isolated child, so I made up stories, people, characters and situations. I had no idea that I was, in a sense, writing. So, as a budding novelist with a wild imagination, I began to write my imaginary characters and stories down. I wrote my first short story at age nine or ten, and it was a ghost story. Every Halloween, or any family gathering, I was the one who was summoned and appointed to tell the ghost stories. I loved making up worlds and characters, and mostly loved scaring my cousins! However, as I got older, I had no interest in writing horror. One of my literary idols, Stephen King, would be a very tough act to follow.

I am inspired by the world around me. I am inspired by people, how they are, and how I feel they should be. “Crashers” is a morality tale about desperate people caught up in the underworld of crime due to circumstances beyond their control. The story was inspired by an actual event that happened to me. The situation was hardly serious, but the other parties involved became very greedy and selfish, and I was inspired to write my novel. The characters, although fictitious, are edgy, gritty and live on the edge of danger for their own covetous personal gain. Not that I have a fantasy about being that, but I like to see offensive characters get their comeuppance sometimes, which does not happen in real life as much as it should.

WEEKENDS COVER 2I write in many different genres, as I get inspired by many different things. Weekends was inspired by a very handsome man I knew many years ago. It was more a romantic fantasy, not unlike my erotic short stories. I love a bit of danger as well, so I have thrown a bit of suspense into my romantic story. I guess I have always had a fantasy of being a police detective, or being swept away by a gorgeous, handsome cop.  I almost feel that writers live in a fantasy world of their liking, and create inspiration from that world. I can’t speak for all writer’s, but that is how I operate.

City-of-toys-linds-s-kudisMy novel, City of Toys was inspired by my life as an aspiring actress in Los Angeles. It was a difficult, yet exciting time. I experienced many trials and tribulations during my quest for fame and fortune, and it was enough to write a book, literally. The experience was a daunting one, yet very thrilling and rewarding to find that determination within myself to forge ahead in the frightening minefield that is Hollywood. I had the urge to share my experience, and I did. I have no regrets that I never won an Oscar or made it “big”, I feel regrets are a waste of time. However, I had incredible material for a novel.

I just let myself become inspired by many things: life, people, the world, California, New York, traveling to exotic places, romance, sex and adventure. All those interesting things that I fantasize about. I just feel the urge, and I sit down and create my imaginary world. It makes me feel creative, inspired and powerful. I can create my characters to have anything, do anything, and achieve anything I wish them to achieve, do or have. That feeling inspires me. Many other things inspire me – my family, my kids and my friends. I have very creative friends, and come from a very creative family, too. I feel best when I just sit back, relax and breathe, and let life inspire me. Only then, will the inspiration come.

Q and A Monday: Get to know a Lachesis Publishing Author (Lindy S. Hudis)

City-of-toys-linds-s-kudis-500x724SM-CLUB-COVERWelcome to our Lachesis Publishing Q and A Monday. Every Monday we feature a Q and A with one of Lachesis Publishing’s wonderful authors. Today, Lindy S. Hudis shares some insight about her life and her writing. Lindy has written several books for Lachesis Publishing, including the mystery Weekends, a women’s fiction with a dose of suspense City of Toys and the erotica series Devon and Desiree which includes two installments so far: The S and M Club and The Mile High Club.

When did you first realize you wanted to become a writer and why?

I realized I want to be a writer by accident, really. I was pregnant with my daughter, so I was home alone quite a bit. I always loved to read, and I had this fantasy about writing. So, to pass the time, I sat down at the computer and it just came out of me. I mostly did it to alleviate the boredom of being home by myself. Then, the next thing I knew I had about two-hundred pages. To make a long story short, I put a query letter together, thought “what the heck” and started submitting it. I could wallpaper my house with all the rejection letters, but I eventually found a publisher, and there you go. My father-in-law isNorman Hudis , who wrote for a number of television shows back in the ’60s and ’70s. He has always been an inspiration to me, and was the one who encouraged me to pursue writing. I was very nervous about him seeing my manuscript for the first time, as he is this successful writer, but he really liked what I had and encouraged me to keep on writing.

Describe your favourite place to write?

In the bed with my laptop in my lap, or at my desktop on my desk. It is just a matter of my mood.

What would I find on your desk at this very moment?

Clutter. Lots and lots of clutter. Pens, pencils, my kids t-ball registration forms, pictures, more pens, books, post-it notes and did I mention clutter? Also, lots of dust, I’m not very domestic.

What is your tea/coffee beverage of choice when you’re writing?

Water, I drink a liter of water a day.

What do you love to read?

My bookshelf is a very eclectic mix of self-help, fiction, and movie scripts. It is hard for me to name a specific type of genre I like to read, I just like having a book in my hand. Stephen King is one of my favorite authors. He is so prolific. Even though I don’t write horror, he is a huge inspiration.

What is some good advice you can give to an emerging writer?

Don’t give up, never do. Follow your bliss, because your bliss is your path!

What do you do after you finish a book? Do you celebrate or take a nap?

I celebrate while I am taking a nap!

Tell us about the inspiration/idea for your Lachesis erotica novella series about Devon and Desiree and their sexploits.

I read an article in a magazine one time about a private bondage club in LA. It seemed very interesting to me, so, my imagination being as vivid as it is, I went to work. It is a fantasy series for me.

Your mystery Weekends and your women’s fiction (which has some suspense) City of Toys, are both set in Los Angeles/Hollywood. Why do you think Hollywood holds such a mystique for us?

People seem to be fascinated with the movie business. Los Angeles seems to be this magical, mysterious place that so many people dream about. I think it takes people back to the Golden Age of Hollywood, with the red carpet, glamorous movie stars and celebrity gossip. Everybody seems to be interested. Maybe people want some sort of fantasy escape, or our celebrity culture is responsible? Maybe a bit of both.

What are you working on next?

LindyHudisRight now I am working on the next installment for my erotic short story series. The working title is “Backstage Pass”. I was a big fan of the ’80s “hair metal” bands, and I got to meet some of the rock stars on a few occasions. Hopefully I will be finished by the end of the summer. In the meantime, come visit me on Facebook or Twitter!
