ABOUT THE BOOK:
Some secrets can come back to haunt you . . .
School principal Emily Taylor feels safe in the friendly little town of Burchill—until she finds a body in her school. The murder of caretaker Nathaniel Ryeburn brings back memories she’d rather forget and plunges Emily into a mystery that involves a secret diary, an illegal puppy mill and a murderer cleverly disguised as an ordinary citizen.
As fear rips through the traumatized town, Emily’s investigation inadvertently leads the police to her door, and to her husband Langford, who is hiding a secret of his own. It becomes clear to Emily that many of Burchill’s residents are merely wearing masks. And it’s time for those masks to be ripped away . . . and for a killer’s identity to be revealed.

Sneak Peek Monday: The Focaccia Fatality by J.M. Griffin (mystery fiction)

Focaccia fatality 453x680Today’s Sneak Peek is from The Focaccia Fatality (mystery) by J.M. Griffin, Book 3 in J.M.’s yummy and funny Deadly Bakery series. J.M. is also the author of the popular (and sexy) Vinnie Esposito series.

Warning! J.M.’s books will make you laugh out loud and want to eat!

The Focaccia Fatality

What it’s about:

Melina Cameron is single, and looking. For a date. Not another dead body.

Her former flame, the sexy Scotsman, Aidan Sinclair, went MIA after he proposed a few months ago, so Melina isn’t wasting any more bread and tears on that one! When hunky police detective Porter Anderson asks her out, she says yes. She could do worse than dating a cop. She and Porter already have a lot in common given her penchant for finding dead bodies.

When high-ranking politician Vincent Gallagher hires Melina to cater his swanky party, and specifically requests her famous focaccia, Melina looks forward to the event, and the potential new customers it could bring. Not to mention, flirting with the cute waiters. But two things happen on that fateful night that could change the course of Melina’s future. First, Aidan walks into the party with a tall, sultry blonde. Second, that same tall, sultry blonde winds up dead, and Melina is the one who discovers the body!

This can’t be good for business let alone Melina’s love life.

Now, Melina has to figure out how to stay away from Aidan, and figure out who killed the blonde, or she might be the one to take the fall.

EXCERPT:

The rear entrance of Vincent Gallagher’s stately residence lay at the far end of his driveway. Before the crowd arrived, I figured I’d unload the goods, and then park my Fiat down the street. I hustled bags and trays into the kitchen. As with many houses in the area, this kitchen had been upgraded to accommodate today’s cook. I hesitated to think Mrs. Gallagher even made toast, but one could never tell for sure.

With the car parked a block away, I hurried back to the house and set about filling trays and bundling rolls into baskets. Mrs. Gallagher showed me where to place the breads and asked if I’d hang about to refill as needed. I’d been aware that I was supposed to do so, and agreed without mentioning Vincent’s request.

Guest after guest, couple after couple, arrived. I stood near the kitchen end of the hallway to watch beautifully dressed people enter the house and idly drop their coats into the hands of a doorman who’d been hired to deal with that particular job. Lawyers, congressmen, senators, and the like arrived first, followed by those I thought were friends and relatives. When most of the guests had come in and began to wander through the enormous rooms, I moved farther back into the hallway where lighting was dim and I wasn’t quite so visible. After all, I wasn’t a guest and was happy about it. Put it down to shyness or signs of inferiority. Either way, I didn’t like to hobnob with the rich and famous.

I’d started to turn toward the kitchen when two more guests arrived. I inhaled sharply, my breath caught in my throat. A beautiful woman, draped in a white ermine fur cape and dressed in a sparkling, long black gown, entered the foyer. She laughed and coyly turned to the man behind her. He walked with a slight limp and used a cane as he progressed into the space behind her. Aidan Sinclair stood dressed in a suit that I bet cost more than my shop earned in a week. His handsome face and gorgeous smile wasn’t lost on me or the woman he was with. My heart sank, right down into my shoes. So much for I’ll be back in the morning to ask you to marry me again, the shithead.

Abruptly, I stomped into the kitchen, liberated a glass of wine off the tray a waiter carried, and gulped it in one clean swallow. If he’d hesitated another second, I’d have taken another. I glanced around, saw everyone staring, and laughed out loud before I said, “Good cheer to you all, let’s get this party underway.”

What inspires your writing? By Jacqui Morrison (suspense thriller author)

THE VIGILANTE COVERJacqui Morrison is our guest blogger today. Jacqui has written two suspense thrillers for Lachesis PublishingKaitlyn Wolf Crown Attorney and The Vigilante. Her books delve into the gritty underpinnings of society.

Today Jacqui shares what inspires her writing . . .

I am a visual person and a people watcher. The best writers I know have an extra spectator quality: the ability to be at an event and to be able to observe and participate. Once I heard that term for the first time I had an ‘ah ha’ moment, I was not alone; there were other people like me. I embraced my quirkiness as a gift.

As a child I was a dreamer and imagined entire mansions full of secret staircases and hidden rooms. Doesn’t every child dream in colour? If not they should, it’s fun. Those early dreams morphed into daydreams, which turned into detentions for not paying attention at school. I’d love to go back in time and let those teachers know that daydreams inspire my novel writing.

kaitlyn-wolfe-crown-attorneyI saw a woman (a stranger) walking across the road in my town in northern Ontario, Canada. The stranger was of Aboriginal descent, proud, beautiful and serene. Her features, high cheekbones combined with piercing brown eyes, enchanted me. I knew one day she’d become a character. The chance encounter with the stranger, who I never saw again, percolated in my sub-conscious and she became the protagonist in my novel Kaitlyn Wolf Crown Attorney. The story of an Anishnaabe woman who experienced multiple tragedies as a youth, rose above her circumstances and became a Crown Attorney only to be foiled by defense lawyer Maxine Swayman known as ‘The Barracuda”.

Maxine Swayman, my reoccurring antagonist, is a red-haired, spitfire of a woman with beauty, poise and intellectual brilliance. She’s manifested from my Irish heritage and the plethora of strong females I have known throughout my life. Maxine’s personality comes from watching lawyers on Court T.V. on television, in court in real life and from my imagination. Maxine Swayman is the antagonist in both my novels Kaitlyn Wolf Crown Attorney and The Vigilante

I’m inspired by well-known authors including: Peter Robinson the author of the Inspector Banks mysteries, Agatha Christie, Linwood Barclay, and Margaret Mitchell, to name a few.

Mysteries, my genre of writing, are like a puzzle. If you lose one or two puzzle pieces you’ll never fully complete the picture. It’ll haunt you.

Mysteries, like those enigmatic mansions I created in my mind as a child, are my puzzles. I’ll spend hours and days planting clues, and writing plot twists and when I’m stuck, I’ll spend time in nature. Nature’s beauty never stops inspiring me and after a needed break, I’ll return to my laptop ready to continue unraveling the puzzle.

Q and A Monday: Get to know a Lachesis Publishing Author (Lindy S. Hudis)

City-of-toys-linds-s-kudis-500x724SM-CLUB-COVERWelcome to our Lachesis Publishing Q and A Monday. Every Monday we feature a Q and A with one of Lachesis Publishing’s wonderful authors. Today, Lindy S. Hudis shares some insight about her life and her writing. Lindy has written several books for Lachesis Publishing, including the mystery Weekends, a women’s fiction with a dose of suspense City of Toys and the erotica series Devon and Desiree which includes two installments so far: The S and M Club and The Mile High Club.

When did you first realize you wanted to become a writer and why?

I realized I want to be a writer by accident, really. I was pregnant with my daughter, so I was home alone quite a bit. I always loved to read, and I had this fantasy about writing. So, to pass the time, I sat down at the computer and it just came out of me. I mostly did it to alleviate the boredom of being home by myself. Then, the next thing I knew I had about two-hundred pages. To make a long story short, I put a query letter together, thought “what the heck” and started submitting it. I could wallpaper my house with all the rejection letters, but I eventually found a publisher, and there you go. My father-in-law isNorman Hudis , who wrote for a number of television shows back in the ’60s and ’70s. He has always been an inspiration to me, and was the one who encouraged me to pursue writing. I was very nervous about him seeing my manuscript for the first time, as he is this successful writer, but he really liked what I had and encouraged me to keep on writing.

Describe your favourite place to write?

In the bed with my laptop in my lap, or at my desktop on my desk. It is just a matter of my mood.

What would I find on your desk at this very moment?

Clutter. Lots and lots of clutter. Pens, pencils, my kids t-ball registration forms, pictures, more pens, books, post-it notes and did I mention clutter? Also, lots of dust, I’m not very domestic.

What is your tea/coffee beverage of choice when you’re writing?

Water, I drink a liter of water a day.

What do you love to read?

My bookshelf is a very eclectic mix of self-help, fiction, and movie scripts. It is hard for me to name a specific type of genre I like to read, I just like having a book in my hand. Stephen King is one of my favorite authors. He is so prolific. Even though I don’t write horror, he is a huge inspiration.

What is some good advice you can give to an emerging writer?

Don’t give up, never do. Follow your bliss, because your bliss is your path!

What do you do after you finish a book? Do you celebrate or take a nap?

I celebrate while I am taking a nap!

Tell us about the inspiration/idea for your Lachesis erotica novella series about Devon and Desiree and their sexploits.

I read an article in a magazine one time about a private bondage club in LA. It seemed very interesting to me, so, my imagination being as vivid as it is, I went to work. It is a fantasy series for me.

Your mystery Weekends and your women’s fiction (which has some suspense) City of Toys, are both set in Los Angeles/Hollywood. Why do you think Hollywood holds such a mystique for us?

People seem to be fascinated with the movie business. Los Angeles seems to be this magical, mysterious place that so many people dream about. I think it takes people back to the Golden Age of Hollywood, with the red carpet, glamorous movie stars and celebrity gossip. Everybody seems to be interested. Maybe people want some sort of fantasy escape, or our celebrity culture is responsible? Maybe a bit of both.

What are you working on next?

LindyHudisRight now I am working on the next installment for my erotic short story series. The working title is “Backstage Pass”. I was a big fan of the ’80s “hair metal” bands, and I got to meet some of the rock stars on a few occasions. Hopefully I will be finished by the end of the summer. In the meantime, come visit me on Facebook or Twitter!
