PUBLISHER: SoulMate Publishing

WHAT IT’S ABOUT:
Carrie Preston has a puzzling and mysterious gift for sensing motive, desire and direction of a perpetrator and killer. Homicide Detective Tom Watts recognizes this gift and is not beyond exploiting it. Waking one midnight to the ringing telephone, Carrie knows the voice on the other end.

Tom begins his familiar plea, asking for her help in solving recent murders that appear to be connected. A pattern develops of brutal knifings in health clubs with the victims all women. What is the tie in? Carrie protests she doesn’t need Tom Watt’s brand of sickness, but she cannot help feeling the familiar draw both to solving the tragic killings and to Tom Watts.

Carrie and Tom chase clues throughout Colorado from Denver to the famous ski town of Aspen, stopping over to recoup and enjoy each other’s company in the world famous Hot Springs Pool at Glenwood Springs. Carrie and Tom may be getting closer as they follow the horrendous trail, the sites of brutal and gruesome deaths, but so is the killer. Closer to Carrie that is. Suspense mounts with each murder, each clue, and every sensation that Carrie follows toward revelation. In a parallel line, the growing tension between Tom and Carrie increases and builds. Both resolutions promise like terror-risk and danger. Will the killer change his pattern and decide to make Carrie his next “special treat, his bon-bon”?

REVIEWS:

Carrie Preston has a gift she thinks most people have, but keeps locked within themselves. She’s happy with her life teaching seminars on how to unlock your inner potential. So why does she agree to help Lt. Tom Watts with a chilling serial killer? But the draw of the case – and the man himself, has her climbing out of her warm bed and heading to a grisly murder scene.

Lest I spoil the story for you, I won’t say more than get a copy of this book. D. M. Woods has constructed a riveting tale, with strong characters, and a fast paced plot. To say I couldn’t put the book down is a major understatement. Ms Woods has started a fantastic series, and I wait with bated breath for #2. Colleen Greene w/a Callie Hutton

CHILDREN OF THE FOG by CHERYL KAYE TARDIF (supernatural suspense)

Our latest REVOLVING BOOK is by CHERYL KAYE TARDIF

TITLE: Children of the Fog

GENRE: SUPERNATURAL/SUSPENSE

PUBLISHER: Imajin Books – http://imajinbooks.blogspot.com/p/our-books.html

WHERE YOU CAN BUY THE BOOK:

SYNOPSIS

YOU HAVE 10 SECONDS TO MAKE A THE MOST IMPORTANT DECISION OF YOUR LIFE:

Let A Kidnapper Take Your Child, Or Watch Your Son Die.

Choose!

Sadie O’Connell is a bestselling author and a proud mother. But her life is about to spiral out of control. After her six-year-old son Sam is kidnapped by a serial abductor, she nearly goes insane. But it isn’t just the fear and grief that is ripping her apart. It’s the guilt. Sadie is the only person who knows what the kidnapper looks like. And she can’t tell a soul. For if she does, her son will be sent back to her in “little bloody pieces”.

When Sadie’s unfaithful husband stumbles across her drawing of the kidnapper, he sets into play a series of horrific events that sends her hurtling over the edge. Sadie’s descent into alcoholism leads to strange apparitions and a face-to-face encounter with the monster who abducted her son–a man known only as…The Fog.

TEASER:

She was ready to die.
She sat at the kitchen table, a half empty bottle of Philip’s precious red wine in one hand, a loaded gun in the other. Staring at the foreign chunk of metal, she willed it to vanish. But it didn’t.
Sadie checked the gun and noted the single bullet.
“One’s all you need.”
If she did it right.
She placed the gun on the table and glanced at a pewter-framed photograph that hung off-kilter above the mantle of the fireplace. It was illuminated by a vanilla-scented candle, one of many that threw flickering shadows over the rough wood walls of the log cabin.
Sam’s sweet face stared back at her, smiling.
Alive.
From where she sat, she could see the small chip in his right front tooth, the result of an impatient father raising the training wheels too early. But there was no point in blaming Philip—not when they’d both lost so much.
Not when it’s all my fault.
Her gaze swept over the mantle. There were three objects on it besides the candle. Two envelopes, one addressed to Leah and one to Philip, and the portfolio case that contained the illustrations and manuscript on disc for Sam’s book.
She had finished it, just like she had promised.
“And promises can’t be broken. Right, Sam?”
A single tear burned a path down her cheek.
Sam was gone.
What reason do I have for living now?
She gulped back the last pungent mouthful of Cabernet and dropped the empty bottle. It rolled under the chair, unbroken, rocking on the hardwood floor. Then all was silent, except the antique grandfather clock in the far corner. Its ticking reminded her of the clown’s shoe. The one with the tack in it.
Tick, tick, tick…
The clock belched out an ominous gong.
It was almost midnight.
Almost time.

Bethany O’Brien is a 21st-century woman with a career, ambition, and bills. She doesn’t remember how she once felt about a nearly 4,000-year-old genie named Zubis who suddenly invades her world, but he certainly remembers her. In a previous incarnation, Bethany was an important temple priestess who apprenticed to the djinn. Zubis is powerful, alluring, and infuriatingly bemused by Bethany’s skepticism. He once vowed to love her forever and has no plans of breaking his vow. Along with returning glimmers of this past life, Bethany must soon confront a citizenship in shambles, a job in jeopardy, and a mandate from an ancient society to kill the genie of her dreams. Although the priestess she once was had been taught that a romance with a djinni must never be, Bethany gradually realizes that her love for Zubis must never be forgotten. She will risk her citizenship, her job, and her life to save him.

SNEAK PEEK:
Although her heart beat out a rumba in her chest, Bethany fixed a self-assured expression on her face. Two Saudi guards, precise and silent and wearing brown slacks and tan uniform shirts that bore a palm tree above two crossed swords, flanked the entrance to the embassy lobby.

Beneath a pointed archway, two conveyor belts trundled toward two X-ray machines, waiting to swallow and judge each person’s belongings. Two more Saudi guards waved short wands up and down each guest in succession.

While she waited her turn, Bethany peered down a carpeted hallway where the exodus of guests emptied into a cavernous ballroom. Her heart skipped a beat. There he was again, leaning against a fluted Doric column. The crowd flowed around him as though he were the Colossus of Rhodes, watchful and unmoving.

Blood thrummed in Bethany’s ears. Her head buzzed. She fixed her eyes on the man and willed him to turn toward her. As though in response, he cocked his head sideways, revealing his profile.

The planes of his face suggested the marble bust of an Ottoman conqueror, infused with blood.  The long slope of his nose commanded high cheekbones, angular jaw, and strong chin. Tight curls formed an inky corona that fell across his brow. More than his appearance, it was the way he moved, the set of his shoulders, and the wave in his hair that trumpeted recognition. It really was him.

A surge of familiarity blended with fear and washed across Bethany’s midsection. Vaguely aware of her actions, she pressed a hand against her chest in a gesture of astonishment. She felt certain that she had seen him before, but never in reality. Was it possible?

He was the wraith who haunted her dreams of the past several weeks. Irritation mingled with the burgeoning unease. This guy standing before her was the reason for her lack of sleep.

Only the night before, he had pursued her across empty District boulevards into a black cave inexplicably set in the middle of DuPont Circle. He made no sound and his movements were never frantic or threatening, but she ran from him just the same. And when she had reached a wall as hard and unyielding as coal, she turned to face him.

He didn’t reach for her. He didn’t menace her. He simply watched her with an expression that was at once brash, penetrating, bemused, and unrelenting. From the depths of sleep, Bethany struggled to form words, to petition the rogue who plagued her. She wanted to ask him “Why? What do you want?”
But she could only return his gaze, staring wordlessly into impenetrable eyes as golden and alive as a swirling sandstorm.

That morning, she’d awoken sweating and agitated, with a curse on her lips that she’d definitely buy a window air conditioning unit and would definitely make a concerted effort to speak to this meddlesome man of her dreams when he next appeared.

Now, here he was in the flesh. Bethany’s vision framed the man in slow motion as he turned to face her.  He folded his arms against his chest and locked his gaze on hers. A smile spread across his face. Brazen.

Bethany shut her eyes to close him out, then opened them again, as though waking from a dream. He was there. Even across the distance, she knew that his eyes were the color of sand. He watched her as though he had access to that secluded place in her mind which harbored the things only she knew about herself. Her breath caught in her chest.

REVIEWS:

Book review from Melissa Bradley @ Melissa’s Imaginarium

“This book is savagely beautiful. Julia Phillips Smith puts the monster back into vampire.  She weaves a spell over her readers with her subtly brilliant dialogue and lush descriptions. I could smell the forest, hear the crackle of the fires and oh my God can she write fight scenes in all their bloody, violent glory.”

Book review from Travis Cody @ Trav’s Thoughts

“Her vampires are dark and ravenous; monsters more in the tradition of the vampire as deadly, dangerous and blood thirsty. But it’s not a horror story. It’s a dark romantic adventure with appeal to men and women. All together an outstanding debut.”

SYNOPSIS

An elite brotherhood stands between humans and vampires, preventing one side from annihilating the other. Who are called to this service? Only those warriors who curse God with their dying breath.

Welsh warrior Peredur falls to a spear before he can claim Tanwen for his bride. Raging on the battlefield, Peredur utters the curse that seals his fate and leads him to another life. Using the power of a saint whose bone makes up an amulet, Peredur takes on the trials to become a true member of the brethren. Yet his need for the chieftain’s daughter Tanwen still burns.

Tanwen resists her father’s command to take a husband. The only one who understands her sorrow is Cavan, the wise woman’s son. When he promises that he can reunite her with her beloved, she agrees to his terms. But does Tanwen truly understand the depth of the price that must be paid?

SNEAK PEEK:

Peredur hung forward, his arms stretched awkwardly behind him, bound behind a large tree. Now fully awake, he tried to stand upright and surge forward, but the bonds held.
His brethren gathered all around the tree. Melnak who stood farthest away in the shadows, pulled his amulet from where it hid in his robes then lifted it over his head. As he approached, Melnak said, “God our Father, our brother now descends into the trial you have given him.”
The brethren intoned, “Our Father, hear us,” just as Peredur’s body began to jerk away from the amulet as though compelled to do so. Melnak brought the shining polished bone to rest against the bottom rib of Peredur’s left side.
For a moment Peredur couldn’t see. All before him was blinding white light.
When he came to, Peredur sensed he was somewhere else entirely, no longer bound to the tree.
In the distance, a figure waited for him, a miserable bent man barely clothed in rags. Peredur tried to join him, but at the hint of motion his legs shot through with fiery tendrils. The figure turned his face to see who approached.
Such a man. His face held the expression of one who had endured a torturous vigil, rather like the one from which Peredur could not free himself. But the face also held a beauty that hurt to see. Peredur wanted to turn his face away, but the gaze of those tormented eyes held him and despite the pain, he forced a step or two forward.
I’m coming, Peredur tried to tell him, but the bent figure lowered his head as if overcome by agony after all. Peredur grit his teeth and pushed forward with all his might.
His feet finally moved, but suddenly it seemed the saint was miles from where Peredur could reach him. Peredur’s heart sank.
He remembered in his boyhood, how heavy the sword had been at first, when the sword master made him swing it again and again. His legs just now were the same. They rebelled against his commands.
Move! he shouted at them. Move!
Anger at the injustice of it coursed through him. As the anger rose, the binding stiffness released his legs and his steps grew easier.
Peredur wanted to race to the saint’s side, but what use would there be in that? Now that he could move, he walked with dread toward the fallen bundle of rags and limbs. Kneeling there, he took the saint in his arms and brushed the matted hair from the bruised face.
Saint Cittinus’ eyes fluttered open.
Peredur looked down at the youthful saint in his arms, made old before his time by the captivity and mistreatment he’d endured. As if for the first time, Peredur saw the clear white line of a scar across the saint’s neck, as if a rope had choked him there.
Saint Cittinus looked into Peredur’s eyes. Those cracked lips moved. Instead of ‘I thirst,’ the saint spoke clearly, if softly. “We have no one else to fear,” he said, “but our Lord God. Who is in Heaven.”
Peredur nodded. He stayed as he was and watched the saint expire before his eyes. All the while his angel never took his hand from Peredur’s shoulder.
Saint Cittinus faded from Peredur’s grip, though he still felt the weight of him in his arms.  No sooner than he’d seen it, but Peredur came to.
He found himself still straining in his bonds against the tree. With breathtaking intensity, the pain in his rib returned. Melnak held the amulet to him still, with unyielding grimness.
He thought of the scar upon the saint’s neck. Instead of struggling and cursing as Peredur had done on the battlefield against the spear, Cittinus had accepted the wound that had given him the scar.
It was time to stop fighting.
