ABOUT THE STORY:
In 2018, rookie detective, Kate Garrett lives in the shadow of her near-legendary father Joe. When Joe dies unexpectedly, he leaves Kate half interest in Garrett Investigations, his last case that ties to three murders, a partner she can’t stand, and a legacy to live up to.

Jake Carmedy has lost a partner, mentor and friend, but grief will come later. First, he has a case to solve, one that has detoured from a simple insurance case to a murder investigation. If that isn’t enough, Joe’s daughter seems to want to take her father’s place as his boss.

Each one is working on a different part of the puzzle. No matter how hard they try, Carmedy and Garrett can’t avoid each other…and they might be next on a killer’s list.

SNEAK PEEK:

Mercy waited by Kate’s desk. Except for a little mud spattered on her boots, her black hair, lace t-shirt and leather pants were immaculate. The effect was only slightly spoiled by the fact Mercy looked nervous.

“Thorsen wants to see you,” she said quietly.

“What did I do this time?”

Mercy pursed her lips and nodded toward the docking port. “Take everything. I’ll generate the reports. I’ll be around if you want to talk.”

Brow furrowed, Kate disengaged her eCom from the port and picked up her mug. It was probably not a good idea to walk in to see the Chief of Detectives with a cup of coffee in hand, but the brew had just reached the perfect temperature for drinking. She compromised by taking an extra minute to gulp down half the cup, then poured the remainder in the sink. Wiping a dribble of coffee off her chin she paused outside the only enclosed office in the suite, took a deep breath, and then knocked.

The chief opened the door and ushered Kate in. This didn’t bode well. His usual response was bellowing, “Come in.”

Usually, Kate felt like a shrimp in the presence of her boss. She’d made the minimum height requirement to join the police force and there was nothing wispy or fragile about her. But Chief Igor Thorsen was a giant of a man, a Viking warrior with long red-blonde hair, a full beard and the hint of a Nordic accent. Most would say Igor Thorsen was a behemoth. ‘Large as life and twice as ugly,’ her father joked. Except right now, he seemed deflated.

“What’s wrong, Chief?”

“Kathleen…it’s your father.”

And then Kate knew. The knowledge closed in on her, shutting down her ability to react, to speak, to take a breath. It wasn’t just the Chief who had shrunk. The whole world had suddenly grown smaller.

Kate Garrett works as a police detective in a city in southwestern Ontario. She’s in the midst of a drug-related homicide investigation when she gets the worst news possible: her father Joe has been hit by a car and killed. A retired police officer himself, Joe had since turned to running his own private investigation service. Was it his most recent case that put him in harm’s way? Or was this merely a tragic accident? http://tinyurl.com/afgvtmo

Alison Bruce has concocted a complex and very interesting plot and delivered it in a fast-paced story with well-developed and realistic characterization. I look forward to the next installment in this series.

Bruce writes a novel, which grips your attention from the first page. There is romance, grief and a complex plot. It has grim crime scenes, the unexpected beauty found in the dark corners of a city, vividly realistic characters and an irreverent sense of humour. In other words, it’s a treat for the senses.

This is a great read. Alison Bruce’s Kate Garrett is a wonderful, complex, intelligent and realistic character. Then Bruce surrounds Kate with other quirky personalities. As a result, the reader is along for the hunt while Kate tracks a poisonous predator. ~ Garry Ryan, author of Malabarista.

BLURB:

Carrie and Tom join together again to track a serial killer bent on eliminating selected petite blondes. A serial killer that is filled with anger, remorse and pain. Pain that is methodically inflicted on those chosen. Death that comes in a take-out cup of deliciously brewed latte. A killer dubbed Latte Lover by detectives desperately trying to unravel the identity of this bitterly focused person. The clues are meager—a cup of latte, a missing lock of hair, and an unidentifiable poison. What is the link between the murdered women? Carrie and Tom fight against a time-table known only to the killer.

Homicide detective, Tom Watts, isn’t beyond exploiting Carrie’s particular talent as he lures her back into helping him, needing her gift of perceiving what isn’t there, feeling what others refuse to see or acknowledge, and his desire to have her back into his life. He senses Carrie is ready to do combat again after her last brush with a serial killer dubbed The Jock. A harrowing brush with death that left her healing in a hospital bed. Carrie stops fighting Tom’s request and joins this man who holds a piece of her heart. What will stop the Latte Lover from deciding that although neither Tom nor Carrie meets the criteria, they could be the next victims?

I live in Colorado with my husband and my two Yorkie kid dogs: Stormy, four pounds, and Eli, six pounds. I’m a native of Colorado, but I’ve lived several years in Wyoming and Montana. My historical romances are: Montana Star, Sapphire Blue, Unconquerable Callie, and Wyoming Heather. Tears In The Wind is a contemporary romance. Then I changed genres from my beloved romances and wrote, under the pen name of D. M. Woods, my first suspense/thriller: Death Crosses The Finish Line. The second book in this ‘death’ series, Death Is A Habit, came out January 8th, this year. I am currently working on the third book of this series, Death Walks C Dock. Truly, I mean it when I say my greatest pleasure next to writing is having my books read and enjoyed. There are many more stories just waiting to be written.

Q and A with Jacqui Morrison (suspense/thriller author)

kaitlyn-wolfe-crown-attorneyJacqui Morrison is our guest author today. Jacqui has written two suspense thrillers for Lachesis Publishing – Kaitlyn Wolf Crown Attorney and The Vigilante. Her books delve into the gritty underpinnings of society.

When did you first realize you wanted to become a writer and why?

When my husband and I had our little girl we could only get two TV stations. While on maturity leave I wrote a newspaper column and some fictional short stories. When I read my fictional story Self-Imposed Isolation out loud people cried. It was then that I knew.

Describe your favourite place to write?

In the winter my favourite place to write is in a recliner in my bedroom. In the summer, I have a little cabin in our yard named WRITER’S BLOCK.  I can hear the birds as I sit in my cabin and write.

What would I find on your desk at this very moment?

I have a book on mediation for work and two or three files of projects I’m working on. It’s a real mish-mash.

What is your tea/coffee beverage of choice when you’re writing?

Coffee, coffee and more coffee.

What do you love to read?

I took some advice from another writer. He suggested I read books out of my genre. I love mystery and suspense, which are my genre. I choose a non-fiction topic each winter and read everything I can on the subject. The non-fiction helps to inspire my fiction.

What is some good advice you can give to an emerging writer?

Don’t ever give up. Follow your writing with passion. Hone your craft by attending workshops and meeting other writers.

What do you do after you finish a book? Do you celebrate or take a nap?

I put the manuscript away for at least three weeks. I’ll work on other pieces and clean my house. If you come by and my house is immaculate then feel free to ask me about the manuscript I just completed.

THE-VIGILANTE-COVERYou have written two suspense/thrillers for Lachesis – tell us about both books and what inspired them?

I love law and justice – which do not always co-exist. I was inspired to write stories about strong women who had tremendous issues to overcome.

You work in the legal/law enforcement world – how has your work influenced your writing?

It was the opposite for me. Like my interest in writing, I fell into my career. I saw an advertisement to work at a crisis shelter for women and their children and although I did not have a social work background, I took a risk and applied. In time, I became the court worker for the shelter.

What are you working on next?

I am working on the follow-up to The Vigilante (Murder in the City series). Detective Lynette Wilton and defense lawyer Maxine Swayman will be back in the next book.

REVIEWS:

“A fun, entertaining tale between a biker and a cop, KISS OF DECEIT whisks the reader along in a truly believable tale to hunt down the evidence in order to solve the mystery. But the fun doesn’t stop there. Rasey sets out markers to alert readers to the true identity of the happy scarf killer. While LeAnne and Snake learn the true meaning of love, the tale ends in a twist any police officer would think twice about before realizing that criminals will go to any length to cover up their crime of passion. “ Reviewed by Brenda Ramsbacher for Scribblers .

“This is one book I’m glad I didn’t miss. This was a book that kept me pretty riveted throughout the pages. It seemed so obvious who the killer actually was but Ms. Rasey managed at the very last minute to turn the tide and make you realize who the real killer was. That’s not always an easy feat and, since I’m not sure how many books Ms. Rasey has behind her, I thought that she turned that corner rather well, all things considered. Yes, I guessed, at the very last moment, who the real killer was but it was truly at the very last moment and I like when that happens. It means, to me, that an author has done the deed well.” Reviewed by Deborah Barber for Escape to Romance .

“Queen of suspense Patricia A. Rasey has another winner here. With seemingly effortless skill, this author has created an original, keenly suspenseful and deeply entertaining thriller that will make your heart skip and your pulse race to dangerous levels. Superb characterization, razor-sharp dialogue, and an excellent knowledge of police procedurals are only some of the fine qualities which make this a first-rate novel. The beginning will hook you. The middle will enslave your hands to the pages. The climax will leave you breathless. Definitely five stars!” Reviewed by Mayra Calvani for EbooksNBytes.com .

“KISS OF DECEIT is a tremendous police procedural with enough romance that will entice romantic suspense readers too. The story line moves faster than Snake’s Harley can go, but insures that he and LeAnne come across as real people. On the surface the lead protagonists seem opposite one another as he lives for the day in his grassroots lifestyle while she looks to the future yet both have deep senses of loyalty and duty. There are plenty of suspects with motives provided for each one. No deceit, this is a winner for those fans who enjoy a taut mystery with plenty of racy tension. Strongly recommend also reading Patricia A. Rasey’s backlist to include FAÇADE, DEADLY OBSESSION and THE HOUR BEFORE DAWN as this reviewer intends to do.” Harriet Klausner for The Best Reviews .
