#4 and #5 Stars!!!

Jersey “The Brawler” Romero is dying. Slowly. Tediously. Not the way he thought he would go out on the savage streets of Glory, the Twilight City. But all of that is about to change when Jersey is granted his youth again by a messenger of the Twilight Goddess, the Spirit of Glory. He’s also given a mission: save Glory from the dark forces that are bent on destroying her.

Jersey’s been a fighter his whole life, whether it was on the streets where he struggled to survive, or in prison where he fought to stay alive. Glory never gave him anything without a battle, and that’s what he’s always loved about his beloved city. But nothing has prepared him for the war that’s coming. Monster-like creatures masked as humans are bent on exterminating him. Their leader is a mysterious man named Templar. He’s been amassing an underground army called The Black Crux. Templar wants to make Glory his, by laying waste to everyone who stands in his way. Possessing an almost otherworldly vision, Templar knows everything about Jersey, including an explosive secret that will blast away everything Jersey has ever believed.

But Jersey isn’t called “The Brawler” for nothing. He’s determined to fight Templar with everything he’s got. Because he’s not just fighting for his life, he’s fighting for Glory’s very soul.

READ AN EXCERPT:

We’re standing on the roof of Skript and Abigail hasn’t said a word in five minutes. She dragged me up here with such urgency, I figured the show would have started by now.

Sitting down in a damp lawn chair, I wait. Patience and I have nothing to say to each other, but Abigail has me intrigued so I let her have all the time she needs. It’s not easy opening up doors that have been locked for so long, especially to strangers. If that’s what we still were. Maybe strange acquaintance is a better term.

The view from the rooftop is actually quite beautiful. Rarely can the word beauty describe Glory. What little good happens to someone here, happens at the expense of someone else’s pain. Surprisingly, the night is peaceful. It’s never peaceful in Glory, so there’s obviously something off, but I don’t have the time nor the inclination to worry about it at the moment. It’s just the cone of silence. The calm before the storm. Strangely, I’m the calm. Abigail is the surging storm.

My eyes fall from the billions of firefly buildings to a sight more pleasing. Abigail stands looking up at the moon. It’s a waxing half-moon, but there’s still enough light for decent visibility. I watch her take off her leather jacket and pull off the gloves and drop them at her feet. Before my eyes, strange symbols begin to appear on her forearms and hands. The spaghetti strap top she’s wearing leaves much of her neck visible where more symbols begin to shimmer. Spiral patterns. They resemble some sort of tribal ink, but they begin to glow like lanterns in the dark. It’s an eerie, beautiful blue light. Cerulean, turquoise, and sapphire.

I stand up and move closer as Abigail turns around. I can see her face now. The incandescent markings have spiraled up her cheeks, climbing like staircases up to her eyes. Both her eyes shimmer inhumanly, one golden amber, the other a pool of twinkling emerald. Her breathing is erratic, she shakes, like she’s frightened I’m going to run away or grimace at the sight of her.

“Th-this . . . is me.” She stutters. “What . . . what I was talking about.”

Before I know it, she’s reaching for her jacket to cover herself. I spring forward and stop her, grasping her firmly by the shoulders. She looks up at me like she’s a monster that should be cowering in darkness. She won’t look at me. I can’t help but wonder who ever looked at her and cringed. Who made her feel so malformed? It’s perfectly clear to me she’s not the abomination she considers herself to be. She’s the most beautiful sight I’ve ever seen. It’s not every day a street devil like me gets to behold a shimmering angel.

I move my hands to her cheeks, rubbing my thumbs over the glittering markings. There’s no textural difference. Her skin is as soft as cashmere. Her radiance is overwhelming. Her glow envelops me.

“My God,” I whisper. “You’re beautiful.”

SNEAK PEEK:

I felt a tremendous surge of energy course through my body. Off to my left, a shadowy outline took form.
Who are you? Why are you disturbing me?
I took a step forward. “I’m someone who can help you cross planes, daemon. I’m here to help you find peace.”
Ah, now I can sense you. A white witch. Hmmm. Too bad I’m not alive, you’d make one tasty meal. Get out of here and leave me be.
“Sorry. I can’t do that.”
I crossed my arms over my chest and shivered slightly. It seemed I’d never get used to the chill that came with the territory, but I forced my discomfort to the back of my mind and advanced further into the room. “What’s your name?”
Phenor. Now go away.
“No can do, pal. I’m being paid good money to exorcise you. Now talk to me. Tell me what happened here.”
I said no.
“Hey, I sympathize. Really, I do. Taken before your time—even though it was most likely your fault—“
Why do you assume so?
“Oh, come on, we all know how you Friezes are. You’d sell your mother if the opportunity were right. Plus, you’re all stubborn as all get out. I know you don’t want to leave this mortal coil, but face it, bucko—you’re dead. It’s over. Go out with some dignity.” I paused. “Your aura is stifling. You must have pissed off someone pretty powerful, huh?”
You’re a pushy one, aren’t you?
I felt a rush of hot, fetid air. Promising. I’d made him sigh.
You want to know so bad, fine. I had A little disagreement with the head daemon. We both found the same woman attractive, and she chose me.
I nodded. Nine out of ten daemon-slayings were over women, usually mortal women who found the bad-boy perennially attractive.
“I feel your pain. You won, but you lost. Anyway, you have to give it up now. You have to let yourself go onto the next plane.”
Why? So I can let a low-life troll have my home? Never!
I squared my shoulders.  Now came the part where I made them realize they had no choice but to go toward the light, to a far, far better place. A speech I’d said so often over the last year and a half, I could recite it backwards in my sleep.
“I understand how you feel, but you have to come to grips with the fact you’re dead now, and this place doesn’t belong to you anymore. You’ve got to come to grips with your situation and leave this plane you’re trapped in. Trust me, once you let go and find peace, you’re going to end up in a much better place. I can help you do it, but you’ve got to cooperate.”
Pretty words. But I doubt where I’m headed would be considered a better place.
Oh, goody. He had attitude. Just what I needed – a difficult daemon.
I heard a sound behind me and whirled. An ominous dark shadow hung in the doorway, floating back and forth. As I watched, it stretched, elongated into another form, one with scales, talons for fingers, and deep red eyes.
Yep. Definitely Frieze.

SYNOPSIS:

For five years, Cassie Reeser has been her brother’s personal lab rat. Peter’s experiments have made her a stronger, faster, better human. And she’s not the only one – he’s been experimenting on others as well.  For five years, escape has eluded her.  Until now.  When she finds out he plans to sell her as a human weapon she knows it’s now or never.  To make her escape she’ll sacrifice family bonds and leave behind the one person who’s ever helped her.  Cassie’s learned to shrink from kindness and to never trust anyone.  She knows the day Peter finally captures her will be the day she dies.  To elude her brother and save the others, she’ll have to risk her body and her heart.  What she doesn’t expect is a chance at a normal life.

Seth Adams is used to sifting through lies to find the truth.  As a former war correspondent he knows what evils lurk in the world.  When he finds Cassie hiding out in his car trunk, her story sounds like a fantastical dream.  But, before long, he witnesses firsthand what she’s talking about when they’re attacked by a group of Peter’s soldiers.  As a result, he goes through his own transformation into a super human and realizes the extent of what Cassie is running from.  Cassie might not think she needs his protection, but he’ll die before he lets her brother have her back.

REVIEWS:
“Think a cross between Heroes (NBC) and Fire Starter.  The action gets you right off.  And this girl is no damsel in distress.  She does the butt kicking thank you very much.” Amazon reviewer
“Superheros was something I didn’t expect at all, so that was cool.  Lots of action and characters I could get behind and understand.  All in all it was well done.” Amazon reviewer.

“I loved every word of it.  It’s more than your standard romantic suspense.  It actually has modern day superheroes in a way that is believable and sustainable for a series…I’ll say one thing, this writer knows how to write hot.” Amazon reviewer

AUTHOR BIO:
Nana’s love of all things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense she borrowed from her cousin on a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana at a precocious thirteen.  She’s been in love with kick butt heroines ever since.  With her overactive imagination, and channeling her inner Buffy, it was only a matter a time before she started creating her own characters.

Waiting for her chance at a job as a ninja assassin, Nana, meantime works out her drama, passion and sass with fictional characters every bit as sassy and kick butt as she thinks she is.  Though, until that ninja job comes through, you’ll find her acting out scenes for hubby and puppy while catching up on her favorite reality television shows in sunny San Diego.

SNEAK PEEK:

Cassie stepped through the door without a backward glance.  Shoulders straight.  Eyes level.  Look ahead.  No one would be able to recognize her.  But she had to avoid using her power until absolutely necessary.  Sweat slicked her palms and she said a silent prayer to any God she could think of.   Luck was on her side. She moved through the brightly lit lobby, complete with eye scanners and armed guards.  No one noticed her.  And why would they.  She looked like one of the anonymous grad students working slave wages and long hours to make a name for themselves.  All too absorbed in their own daily movements.

As she rounded the corner to the employee area, she allowed herself one backward glance.  The resulting collision knocked her onto her butt.

“Oh, shit.  I’m so sorry.  I wasn’t looking where I was going and—”

Cassie blinked up at the man, the cold of the floor seeping through her jeans.  Her body tensed when he opened and outstretched hand.  Her instincts said to run, but his eyes told her she was safe.  Honey-brown and laced with concern, he stared at her.

She patted the wig to make sure it was still in place before taking his proffered hand.  Contact with his skin made her jump like she’d just gotten a shock from an appliance.  But instead of the immediate wash of senses and thoughts she expected, he barely registered.  All she noticed was how his firm, warm hand dwarfed hers.

He looked down at their joined hands before grinning at her.  His face lit up, showing just how handsome he was.  Like the hero out of a romantic comedy.

Say something before you screw this all up.  She cleared her throat.  “I’m fine.  Not your fault.  I wasn’t watching where I was going.”  Her voice sounded strange in her ears.  Husky.

“Are you sure you’re okay?  You look like you took a hard bump.”

Cassie shifted and tried to step around him.  The new guards were coming on shift.  Just her luck, one of the two, was the guard who caught her the last time.  “No, I’m fine.  Really.”

Mr. Romantic Comedy wouldn’t be deterred.  He danced with her as she shifted, never letting go of her hand.  “Okay, then at least let me apologize for being a klutz.  My mother always taught me to take care of a lady.  If you won’t at least sit down, maybe I can take you to dinner?”  He slapped his forehead.  “I should have led with my name.  Seth Adams.  It’s been a pleasure running into you.”

Cassie’s mouth went slack.  His voice flowed over her like warm rain in the summertime.  Had he just asked her out?  This was a territory completely unfamiliar to her.  Luckily, she watched enough movies to understand the concept.  “I’m sorry I can’t.”

He chuckled and shrugged.  “Would it help if I phrased it like journalistic research?”  His smile was infectious and Cassie wished she was the young intern he thought she was.  Dragging in a breath, she knew she had to mind push this conversation out of his memories.  Later, when someone came looking for him, she didn’t want him to remember her.

Problem was, as she pushed, she met a brick wall of resistance.  The shield around him was like a rubber ball, his brain so dense and slippery nothing could burst through.  Pain zinged behind her eyes and reluctantly, she stopped.

“I’m sorry, but no.”  Cassie pulled her hand free from his and bee-lined for the exit, never looking back at him.  Keep your head in the game Cassie.  She joined the queue for the metal detectors and adjusted the hair of the wig around her face.  When it came her turn to be searched, she tried to look calm.  She didn’t want to take any chances with the guard, so she immediately mind pushed him to do a cursory glance of her backpack.

“You’re free to go Ma’am,” he said, his voice a little dreamy.

She tucked her chin down and mumbled a thank you.  Ten more steps.   As she rounded the corner to the outer door, someone called out.  “Hey, wait a minute.”

For a millisecond, she paused, weighing and tossing out her options.  She had to stop.  She was weak and tired, but she could push someone if left with no other choice.  She didn’t turn heavy when footfalls thudded behind her.

A meaty touched her arm and a small squeak bubbled up without her consent.  Was this the end?  Had she risked her friend’s life for nothing?

“You dropped your badge back there.”

Cassie had to take the swipe card.  If she didn’t, she’d look suspicious.  But if she turned, he might recognize her.  Rock, meet hard place.  Turning on her heel, she reached out with sweat slick hands and snatched the card without meeting the guard’s eye.

His voice was stern.  “Security is extremely important here at Gentech.  If you need a refresher on security procedures, ask your manager.”

Nodding her acquiescence she turned and kicked up her pace, veering toward the main parking structure.  She had to make sure he wasn’t following before she accessed the private parking lot.  Three seconds passed before heavy footsteps pounded behind her..

“Hey.  What’s your name?  Are you new here?”  The guard’s lumbering body followed her at a quick clip.  Cassie paused and turned around knowing  she was cooked.  She watched as panic dawned in his eyes.

Make your decision.  Fight or flight.  She chose fight.

A SNEAK PEEK:

“Wow,” Arik said. “If that was an apology, it’s lame. Are you really sorry about all of this?”

“Yes.”

For some reason, Limos’s answer pissed him off. “Sorry” was for when you forgot to take out the trash when it was your turn. “Sorry” was for when you bought the wrong kind of wine to go with dinner. “Sorry” did not work when you lost your temper and beat the shit out of your wife and kids.

“Sorry” wasn’t enough when you blew your paycheck on booze instead of on food for your family. And “sorry” sure as hell didn’t cut it when you sent someone to hell to have their skin peeled off.

He wheeled around, snaring her wrist as he backed her against the glass. “Your sorry isn’t good enough.”

“What can I do to prove it to you?”

“For starters, you can admit that I didn’t force any kiss on you. You can admit you wanted it. You wanted me.”

Her violet eyes grew liquid. “I can’t,” she whispered. “If I do, this was all my fault.”

“Newsflash, My Little Pony, it was.”

SNEAK PEEK:

Tequelin appeared in a mist, naked, except for delicate wristbands of gold. His hair was loose now, untamed, wild, a glowing snowstorm around that strange haunting face. A light illuminated his eyes, blue diamonds circling black luminous pools. Deeply muscled, strength radiated from every inch of his pale skin.

Cringing on the ground, she tried to crawl away. An arm caught her around the waist, drew her from the floor and hauled her against a massive chest. The beat of his heart vibrated against her shoulder. Long white fingers closed around her throat, almost meeting at the back. He pulled her face back to meet his gaze. Squeezing her eyes shut she struggled, digging her fingernails into the flesh of his forearm. The skin hardened into rock.

“See me.” The whispered words spun through the room. Belle had no strength to fight. She opened her eyes.

Tequelin stared down into her soul, his mouth opened softly, bending down to steal a kiss. When his lips touched hers, everything changed.

Passion flamed between her legs, drenching her. It spread through her skin like wild fire. The hard knot shoved into her back made her weak with need. In a glint of revulsion, Belle knew her body would betray her under Tequelin’s touch. She had to stop it. Now. Quickly.

“Still,” he whispered against her lips, and she froze in place, tremulous whimpers vibrating in her chest. The fingers left her throat.
